Jujutsu Kaisen: Tsurugi Okkotsu's Full Heavenly Restriction, Explained

The original Jujutsu Kaisen series by Gege Akutami ended in 2024 with the conclusion of the Sukuna battle. However, Gege is back with a sequel series, titled Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo, and this new manga has officially reached its peak, delivering intensely heated battles all across. Two major battles are intensely raging on at the moment, and at the center of them are the new main characters, Yuka and Tsurugi Okkotsu.

Gege Akutami intends for Tsurugi Okkotsu to be the next Maki Zenin, and Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 20 highlighted his incredible transformation as he fully awakens as a non-sorcerer. Tsurugi, the grandson of Maki Zenin, just unlocked his full potential and became fully Heavenly Restricted. As such, a new fighter on the same level as Toji Fushiguro and Maki Zenin has just emerged. Tsurugi can now stand on his own and potentially reach the level of Special Grade without the help of Rika.

Maki Zenin and Toji Fushiguro Were Superhumans Due To Their Heavenly Restriction

• Toji Was Born Without Any Cursed Energy

Sorcerers in Jujutsu Kaisen are born with cursed energy, and with that energy, they can make use of Jujutsu. Some characters, like Sukuna, Yuta, and Gojo, have immense reserves of cursed energy. In that sense, cursed energy is a must when it comes to fighting in the JJK world.

However, there exists the concept of Heavenly Restriction that changes things greatly for some individuals. Most Heavenly Restricted individuals have no cursed energy at all attain, and instead, they reach new heights of power with just their physical strength. In Jujutsu Kaisen, only two characters have held full Heavenly Restriction so far.

• Toji Fushiguro: The first character that fans saw with a full Heavenly Restriction was Toji, Megumi's father who abandoned the Zenin Clan due to their treatment of him. Known to have been born with a special body, Toji Fushiguro went on to become a terrifying Sorcerer Killer, and with this power, he almost took down Gojo Satoru until he awakened. Toji’s physical gift was such that even Gojo couldn't compete with him before the awakening of his Cursed Technique Reversal.
• Maki Zenin: The second Heavenly Restricted individual fans meet is another Zenin named Maki. Unlike Toji, who was seemingly born with a full Heavenly Restriction, Maki did have some amount of cursed energy for a long while in the story, even though it was a negligible amount. However, things changed for her shortly before the Culling Game arc. Given that the Jujutsu world sees twins as one being, Maki's cursed energy and Mai both needed to go for her to be fully restricted. As long as Mai held cursed energy and Mai had traces in her body, she would remain weak. With her sister’s death, all her cursed energy disappeared, and she reached the same level as Toji Fushiguro, completely annihilating the Zenin clan.

Heavenly Restricted individuals with no cursed energy are overpowered, as seen during Maki's fight against Sukuna. Sukuna, the King of Curses, could not sense Maki coming because she had no energy to sense. They have immunity from most domain sure hits and her senses are heightened to superhuman levels. Heavenly Restricted individuals have great potential, and they have a body of steel, with resistance like no other, as was clear from Maki taking two full Black Flashes from full-power Sukuna and brushing them off.

Rika Took Away The Remaining Cursed Energy of Tsurugi

Previously, only Toji and Maki were fully Heavenly Restricted when it came to the Jujutsu world. But now, a third character with Heavenly Restriction has appeared, and that's none other than Tsurugi Okkotsu, Maki and Yuta's own grandson.

Before Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 20, Tsurugi called upon the powers of Rika, the Special Grade Cursed Spirit previously in the possession of Yuta, to help him in his battle against Maru. As such, Rika took over Tsurugi's body, and they became a hybrid-like powerful being. With the powers of Rika, Tsurugi was able to easily push back Maru in combat and even produce feats of incredible strength.

Recently, in the new Jujutsu Kaisen chapter, Rika finally unfused with Tsurugi, and with her, she took away all his remaining Cursed Energy. Now, it could be said that Tsurugi has fulfilled his Heavenly Restriction and become another individual with no cursed energy at all.

Tsurugi completing his Heavenly Restriction was a point of contention in the story up until now. This is especially because Toji Fushiguro was supposedly born with this condition, while Maki had a twin who kept her away from her full potential. Meanwhile, Tsurugi had little cursed energy in him, but no apparent way to strip it from himself. But now, Gege has revealed the perfect explanation for how Tsurugi was able to achieve this state, thanks to Rika.

Now that Tsurugi Okkotsu has achieved his fully realized Heavenly Restriction, it can be said that, in terms of potential, he is in the same league as the likes of Toji Fushiguro and Maki Zenin.

Tsurugi was, after all, already a seasoned fighter who was trained by Maki while growing up. He even possesses a technique that was not previously seen used by the likes of Toji or Maki, and that is a Simple Domain. Of course, over all those years, it's likely that Maki learned it sometime after the Sukuna Battle and passed it on to him.

Tsurugi also went on to acquire Maki's most prized weapon, the Split Soul Katana in JJK Modulo Chapter 20. As is clear in the story, the Split Soul Katana was a weapon replicated by Mai before dying through her Construction Technique, and the remainder of her soul is stored inside of it. This weapon is one of the most powerful in JJK, as it allows one to inflict damage directly on the soul of whoever it pierces, ignoring all physical defenses.

While the whereabouts of this sword were unknown until now, it has now been confirmed that it was stored inside Rika’s weapon storage, ready to be used at the perfect time and be passed down to Tsurugi. As Yuka gets to receive the ring of her grandfather, Yuta Okkotsu, Tsurugi also gets his own inheritance from his beloved grandmother, Maki.

It goes without saying that Tsurugi Okkotsu is very powerful now, with his newly acquired Heavenly Restriction. However, he still lacks the experience that Maki and Toji possessed. Maki was a went through many grueling battles and trained hard during the Culling Game and Shinjuku Showdown, especially when fighting against Sukuna. Toji also fought many top tiers, such as Gojo and Geto, and dismantled them. By the end of Modulo, Tsurugi could truly become on the same level as them and eventually, even surpass them.
