Gojo was one of the two most powerful Jujutsu sorcerers of all time, so let's see how he hit his peak potential in the series!
The Build Up To The Fight Is Arguably The Best In The Industry
A Fight Promised From The Start
- The fight has been teased from the very first episode.
Throughout the entire anime industry, there has perhaps never been a fight that fans have looked forward to more than Gojo vs. Sukuna. The reason for this can be traced back to the very first episode of the series, where Gojo himself explained that Ryomen Sukuna is widely considered the most powerful Jujutsu sorcerer of all time and that preventing his escape is of the highest priority. Despite this, Gojo, in his usual cocky attitude, explained that even if Sukuna was somehow released, he could definitely beat the King of Curses.
Although this was teased repeatedly, fans never really got a glimpse of it for the longest time. At the start of the Shibuya Incident arc, Kenjaku made sure that the only way his plan could come to fruition was if Gojo was taken out of the equation due to his immeasurable power, leading to the imprisonment of the Six Eyes sorcerer within the Prison Realm. However, despite this, his escape from it was only a matter of time.
During his imprisonment, Kenjaku's ultimate plan of the Culling Game was officially revealed, with one of the main objectives of the heroes being to find the Prison Realm in order to free Gojo. In this time, much had occurred in the world, especially regarding Sukuna himself, who had now taken over the body of Megumi and had collected almost all of his fingers. This led to him becoming far stronger than he had ever been before.
Eventually, the heroes found the Prison Realm and managed to release Gojo, who then wasted no time and flew to Sukuna and Kenjaku's location, ready to scrap. However, Kenjaku would then postpone the fight between Gojo and Sukuna to a later date, ensuring that both of them would be at their peaks and could fight with no holds barred. Eventually, the date came and the greatest battle in manga history would soon begin.

As soon as the fight between Gojo and Sukuna began, it was instantly made clear why these two were considered to be in a league of their own. None could be more deserving of the titles of the strongest sorcerer of all time or the strongest sorcerer of today, as Gojo and Sukuna showed a mastery over Jujutsu and Cursed Energy to a degree that hadn't been seen before, nor has been seen since.
The way that this fight was structured offered the best way to see the areas where each of them was better than their opponent, showing that they were dead equals for the most part. Through many Domain Expansions, Amplifications, and the flourishing of their Cursed Techniques, the strongest sorcerers in the entire Jujutsu Kaisen franchise put on a clinic in a way that confirmed no other Jujutsu sorcerer or Cursed Spirit could even hope to match either of them, and that they were the only ones who could fight one another equally.
Let's start by peeling off those scales!
Gojo had mastered his Infinity technique to its limit and put all of his skills to full use, battering the King of Curses in many Cursed Technique exchanges as well as in hand-to-hand combat. On the other hand, Sukuna had his own Cursed Technique, Cleave and Dismantle, and could even use Megumi's Ten Shadows after taking over his body, giving him the power to summon Mahoraga in order to adapt. On the face of it, Sukuna was getting pummeled for quite a while, but he always had a plan.
Due to him being a Jujutsu genius on a level even beyond Gojo, Sukuna realized that the only way to defeat his opponent was to get through his near-impenetrable defense; the Infinity Cursed Technique. To do this, he used Mahoraga's ability to adapt in many creative ways, eventually learning the only way to bypass Infinity through his use of the Shikigami.
You managed to survive death once already when you were in Yuji. So I've been thinking... I'll worry about Megumi after I kill you!
As for the Domain clashes and other aspects, the two were equal, but Sukuna proved that he was always in it for the long game. Though he still had the benefit of his true form up his sleeve, he purposefully used Mahoraga's powers to learn Gojo's technique in order to come up with the best way to counter it. Eventually, Mahoraga adapted to Infinity by attacking the area around his target rather than the target himself, ensuring that anything within that vicinity would get damaged beyond repair. This was the perfect opening that Sukuna needed.
By utilizing this same principle, Sukuna made Binding Vows to greatly increase the power of his Cleave and Dismantle Cursed Technique in order to cut the area around Gojo rather than through the Infinity itself, creating his ultimate 'World Cutting Slash'. As he gathered enough power, Sukuna used this on Gojo as the hero let his guard down, ultimately ending the fight and killing the strongest sorcerer of the modern day. Through this, Sukuna cemented himself as the strongest sorcerer in all of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Gojo Satoru's death was tragic, but Gege never had any plans to revive him in JJK.
Why This Fight Has The Ability To Surpass Luffy's Gear 5 Form
An Amazing Event
Although Yuji is technically the main character of Jujutsu Kaisen, there can be no doubt that Gojo is the face of the series. From the very first chapter, fans have been introduced to this character and Gege has made it quite clear how much he means to the series as a whole, as he is a benchmark for all the heroes to reach and the main reason why the balance of the world is the way that it is.
It is precisely due to this reason that his death will be so heavily felt in the series, since he is the most beloved character in Jujutsu Kaisen for most fans anyway. His impeccable design and infectious personality have endeared him to every fan. In a genre that usually has mentors acting stoic and serious a lot of the time, Gojo's immaturity always gave him a sense of familiarity with the viewer that made him seem more like a friend to the main characters than a mentor.
However, there is so much more to his character besides this. Underneath his hilarious and calm demeanor, Gojo has always been quite a tormented character who, despite his otherworldly strength, couldn't save his best friend from becoming one of the world's most dangerous criminals, nor could he save the young girl that he was chosen to protect. This internal battle is the crux of his character, as it shows how his loneliness has built a resolve within him to nurture the strength of his students so that they would never have to go through the same thing.
In the end of it all, despite losing the fight against Sukuna, his ideology of leaning on others for help proved to be the superior one, as the thing he gave his life for ended up being the reason the King of Curses was defeated in the first place. There are perhaps no modern anime characters who are as beloved as Satoru Gojo, and his crowning moment in battling his only equal is destined to be one of the greatest in anime history.
Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
