Cursed tools are powerful tools in the Jujutsu Kaisen world. They are weapons that are infused with cursed energy, allowing their users to combat cursed spirits, even if they don't have cursed energy. How much impact has Split Soul Katana had on the series so far?
What is The Split Soul Katana?
The Split Soul Katana is a powerful cursed tool that was used by Toji Fushiguro and Maki Zenin. As the name suggests, the katana allows its wielder to cut directly into someone's soul while ignoring physical resistances at the same time. It was first introduced in the anime in Season 2, Episode 3. Where Toji used it against Geto and Gojo.
Toji also used the katana to cut through the Rainbow Dragon, which at the time was considered one of Geto's strongest curses. After Toji's demise, the whereabouts of the katana were never confirmed. But it was most likely stored in the Zenin Clan's weapon storage.
Maki's Katana is Not the Same as Toji's
In Season 3, Episode 4, Maki visits the Zenin Clan's secret weapon storage. But upon arrival, she comes across her father, who announces that he has already emptied the storage, making it impossible for Maki to get her hands on the original Split Soul Katana. After their father's attack, Maki and Mai are left to die. Realizing the situation, Mai uses her cursed technique to create a replica of the Split Soul Katana and, in exchange, gives away her life.
Maki goes on to use the Split Soul Katana along with Juzo Kumiya's masterpiece: "Dragon Bone" to bring an end to the Zenin Clan. She not only splits her father's head in a single strike but also defeats the entirety of the Kukuru Unit.
Is the Split Soul Katana responsible for Maki's newfound strength?
It is true that the Split Soul Katana greatly enhanced Maki's combat abilities, but it is not the sole reason for her enhanced strength. Mai's death removed all the cursed energy that was shared between the twins. In return, Maki's physically strong body was further enhanced to levels compared to Toji's.

What Will Happen to the Split Soul Katana?
Maki will continue to use the katana in the Culling Game. Notably, she will use it against Naoya's cursed spirit in the events at Sakurajima Colony. Initially, Maki struggles to severely damage Naoya as she can't use the katana to its full potential. In the nick of time, Hagane Daido appears, who was desperately looking for a katana. He immediately wields the Split Soul Katana, and his sheer skill alone allows him to slash Naoya.
When Maki returns from her training with Rokujushi Miyo, she is finally able to skillfully wield the katana and kills Naoya with ease. The Katana also acts as the final channel of communication between Maki and Mai, hence holding great sentimental value in the series.

Maki Zenin and Toji Fushiguro, the black sheep of the Zenin clan, sure know how to make a mess, but which of them is stronger?
The Split Soul Katana is one of the iconic weapons shown in the anime. While its appearance in the anime is only minimal, it still holds an important place in fans' hearts because it is directly linked to two integral characters, Toji and Maki.
