This article contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo.
The existence of Kalyans in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo quickly became a source of conflict between the Rumelians and the Japanese sorcerers, who initially wanted a peaceful coexistence. The two races have reached a point of no return, as their misunderstandings regarding the Kalyans have already led to two major fights happening in the JJK sequel right now: Dabura vs Yuka Okkotsu and Maru vs Tsurugi Okkotsu.
Long before the hostilities between the Rumelians and the Jujutsu sorcerers, the Kalyans had also brought terror into other Simurian tribes. Their obscene diet drove many tribes to antagonize the Rumelians and their Kalyan religion with an isolationist policy that ended so many lives. Two years later, the same thing is unfortunately unfolding in Japan.
Kalyans Are Immortal Creatures From Simuria
Rumelians Worship Kalyans Like Gods
- Kalyans are deities to Rumelians and enemies to other Simurian tribes.
- Kalyans have an unusual diet composed of livestock and non-Rumelians.
Back in Simuria, there exist immortal creatures referred to as Kalyans. Their real origin remains unknown, but they are creatures who can’t die from natural causes. They come in different forms, making them unique from each other. To most Simurian tribes, especially the Deskuntes, they see Kalyans as nothing but apex predators who feed on their kind to sustain their existence. They only eat non-Rumelians as part of their unusual diet, after all.
On the contrary, for the Rumelians, such as Maru and Cross, the Kalyans serve as deities. In fact, there’s a special Kalyan who can decide whether a Rumelian is a warrior or not after birth. Rumelians even get their middle names from the Kalyans, which speaks volumes about the level of respect they have for these sacred creatures. However, their Kalyan religion became the primary reason behind the isolationist policy established by the Deskuntes and the other tribes.
This isolationist policy forced the Rumelians to a barren land where barely any crops could grow. As much as the Rumelians wanted to coexist with the other Simurian tribes, their Kalyan religion left little room for compromise and mutual respect. The Rumelians weren’t willing to turn their backs on their religion either. To abandon it would be to abandon themselves entirely.
Kalyans Are Different from Cursed Spirits
They Are Almost the Same but Not Quite
- Cursed spirits are strikingly similar to Kalyans.
- Kalyans have physical forms, unlike cursed spirits.
Kalyans are different from cursed spirits, despite the apparent parallels. Their striking similarities, however, convinced the Rumelians that Kalyans and the cursed spirits in Japan are the same. After all, their third eyes shed tears whenever nearby cursed spirits are slain by jujutsu sorcerers. For context, a Rumelian’s third eye only weeps at birth, at the brink of death, or when a Kalyan dies.
It’s not difficult to see why many Rumelians, especially Osuki and his group, believe that cursed spirits are just the Japanese version of the Kalyans they worship so much. The main difference is that Kalyans have a physical form, while cursed spirits exist only as manifestations of negative energy. In addition, the shedding of tears after a sorcerer slays a cursed spirit isn’t fatal to the Rumelians compared to when a real Kalyan dies. The act itself takes such a huge toll on the Rumelians’ brains, which can be fatal.
Despite the obvious difference, the Rumelians don’t want any harm done to the cursed spirits. This, of course, becomes a severe problem for Jujutsu sorcerers, as they need to eliminate these cursed spirits to protect their own people and maintain peace. The inhuman Makyo is in dire need of a great purification ritual, but with the Rumelians intervening, any attempt to perform cleansing risks an all-out war.

Yuji Itadori's Aura Is Kalyan
Osuki Confirms Yuji Itadori's Aura Isn't Earthling
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 20 also revealed a major truth about Yuji Itadori and the very essence of his existence. According to Osuki, Yuji Itadori has the aura of a Kalyan, confirming that he is not entirely human anymore. Since Osuki equates a Kalyan to a cursed spirit on Earth, Yuji Itadori can be seen more as a cursed spirit with a physical form rather than a typical human being.
He’s an Earthling, right? But his aura is Kalyan! —Osuki to Yuji Itadori
As fans know, Yuji Itadori is different from any other jujutsu sorcerer on Earth. His father is the reincarnation of Sukuna’s twin brother, while his mother is literally Kenjaku. In addition, Sukuna also resided within Yuji for quite a long time. On top of that, he consumed death paintings that probably altered his body further. It's not a surprise that his body became unaging, and a Rumelian compared his aura to a Kalyan in JJK Modulo.
