With both sequels incorporating aliens in their storylines, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo and Boruto are usually compared. Of the two, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is generally favored as the more rewarding and satisfying follow-up despite being a short series. Thanks to its classic, yet edgy art style, intriguing characters, complex themes, impressive world-building, and more, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo outshines Boruto as the stronger sequel.

Boruto Disregards Its Original Characters

One of the biggest issues fans have with Boruto is how it mishandles the original characters, from Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha to the older generation of ninja. The series treats them as launchpads for the new generation without honoring their roles and contribution to the shinobi world. Even worse, Boruto stripped them of their defining abilities to fast-track the rise of the new generation.

On the contrary, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo respects its original heroes, from Gojo Satoru to Yuta Okkotsu. While they aren’t exactly present in the story, they remain dominant figures in the jujutsu world. The next generation is neither stronger than them nor do they lessen their relevance.

Were you always this weak? —Yuji Itadori to Mahito

  • The best part is that the series acknowledges the power difference between the two generations in a world where cursed spirits and cursed users have been largely contained. The premise holds up, showing the new generation as less powerful because Yuji Itadori and his allies established a safer world that demands less from them in combat.

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Builds on Its Original Concepts

Boruto Offers New Concepts

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo evolves its original concepts through the introduction of the aliens and their abilities in the story. For instance, cursed energy and cursed spirit gain additional complexity with their dynamics with the Simurians’ Rolloluca and the Kalyans. The series also takes its time explaining how these alien abilities can reshape the rules of the Jujutsu world.

Boruto, on the other hand, often struggles to give new dimensions to the original concepts established in Naruto. Though fans learned that shinjutsu was the origin of ninjutsu, the series doesn’t expand on it, leaving gaps that limit the shinjutsu users from fully understanding its mechanics or utilizing its full power.

Instead, Boruto keeps adding power-ups and sci-fi gimmicks, leaving little room to expand foundational ideas like ninjutsu, taijutsu, genjutsu, and more. Even the strongest visual prowess in Naruto, like the Rinnegan, has been toned down as a passive ability, limiting its combat importance.

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Features Intriguing Characters

Boruto Rarely Develops Other Characters

In Boruto, fans can count on one hand which members of the new generation are truly relevant to the story. For over a hundred chapters, the focus remains almost entirely on Boruto and Kawaki’s chaotic relationship, while the rest of the young shinobi, like Sarada and Mitsuki, remain sidelined.

In comparison, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo did more in 20 chapters than Boruto did for its characters. Yuka and Tsurugi Okkotsu aren’t repeats of the original characters, as they have their own personalities, dreams, and struggles. The same is true for the Simurians, including Maru, Cross, Dabura, and even Osuki and Jabaloma, whose personalities and powers are highlighted by consistent screen time, dialogues, and interactions that leave a lasting impression.

Interestingly, fans know the aliens in the Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo better than the aliens in Boruto. While most of the details about the Otsutsuki Clan remain in the dark, JJK Modulo has been generous in sharing the culture, hierarchy, and relationships of the Simurians with the readers.

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Wows with Its Art Style

Boruto's Visuals Need More Creativity

Neither Masashi Kishimoto nor Gege Akutami illustrated their own sequels, with Mikio Ikemoto drawing Boruto and Yuji Iwasaki working on Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo. Hence, the art styles for both of these sequels differ from the originals, giving each sequel a fresh identity and visual approach to the characters, background, and, most importantly, action sequences.

However, between the two sequels, JJK Modulo delivers edgier visuals that make every fight scene feel alive, especially in the Dabura vs. Mahoraga fight. In fact, it is more consistent than Gege Akutami, keeping a high standard of action and expression. The polished retro look in JJK Modulo also adds a nostalgic charm while still giving modern artistry.

Meanwhile, Boruto’s character designs are often criticized for their deviation from the original series, with some fans complaining about Sarada’s revealing outfits and other design choices. The same goes for the action sequences in Boruto that often feel flat and repetitive, lacking the creativity that Kishimoto gave to Naruto.
