This post contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen.
Not many action anime come close to the success of Jujutsu Kaisen. Despite airing rather recently, it has become one of the most well-known series in the world. Fans who have watched the show have been enchanted by the story, characters, and the amount of action. Like any fan base, JJK fans are also divided over some topics. Some prefer more story to action scenes, and vice versa.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Toji vs Maki - Who Is Stronger?
Maki Zenin and Toji Fushiguro, the black sheep of the Zenin clan, sure know how to make a mess, but which of them is stronger?
But the polarization doesn't stop there. Many fans have different opinions about the same character. While this is common and a sign of a good fan base, there are occasions when things can turn toxic quickly. Something similar happened after Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 released its fourth episode.
The Maki Controversy In Jujutsu Kaisen
Maki's Power Increased By A Lot
After JJK Season 3 Episode 4 had premiered, there was a massive discourse on social networking platforms about it. Western audiences loved the episode because it had a great deal of action as Maki slaughtered the majority of the Zenin clan. She hadn't planned to kill her fellow clan members, but Ogi's actions changed everything. Ogi blamed Maki and Mai for his inability to become the next head of the Zenin clan. So, he decided to murder his own flesh and blood for the approval of his clansmen.
He left both his daughters at death's door and began to walk out of the treasury. However, he didn't have the slightest idea that Mai would sacrifice herself and rid Maki of whatever cursed energy she had left. This caused Maki's strength to increase severalfold, after which she not only annihilated Ogi but also several other top assassins of her clan. After dealing with them, Maki was attacked by Naoya Zenin, who considered himself the next head of the clan.
Japanese Jujutsu Kaisen Fans Love Naoya Zenin
- Naoya Zenin has scored high in popularity polls
- Japanese fans didn't like Naoya being beaten
The controversy started after Maki absolutely demolished Naoya in their fight. Prior to the power-up, Naoya could have beaten her without any problem. But Mai's sacrifice allowed her sister to reach the same level as Toji Fushiguro. Considering how Naoya is a despicable human being who disrespects women, it's shocking that he has consistently finished in the top 10 of popularity polls. In the second and third polls, he finished 10th and 6th, respectively. In the fourth popularity poll, he jumped up one spot and finished 5th. Since Maki obliterated Naoya, a fan favorite (according to the polls), it makes sense that the episode is so low-rated in Japan. Their issue is with the treatment of Naoya and not with Maki. So, Japanese JJK fans do not hate Maki; they just love Naoya Zenin too much.
Naoya Zenin Is One Of The Worst Characters In Jujutsu Kaisen
Naoya Zenin Has Mistreated Many People
Powers aside, Naoya Zenin is objectively one of the most horrible individuals in JJK. In fact, he manages to supplant even curse spirits, who are hellbent on wreaking havoc. A person can even make a case for someone like Mahito because he was a cursed spirit, but not for Naoya. The latter is a human being who actively targeted people weaker than him. As a matter of fact, Koji Yusa, the voice actor for Naoya Zenin, was surprised to learn about his popularity among fans.
I looked at the popularity polls in the manga volumes, and for some reason he’s near the top. With that personality? He casually says the most awful things. I get the appeal of “Man, it must feel good to let everything out like that,” so maybe it's that. He’s got high pride and real skill, so he just says whatever he thinks. But the content of what he says still shocks me. Let me be clear: those are Naoya’s words, not mine. It’s genuinely baffling that a character like him is so popular. — Koji Yusa
Thankfully, Maki put an end to the snob's aspirations with a well-placed hit. While Naoya has been eliminated by Maki, there are still many pressing matters that the latter must attend to. The Culling Game is on the horizon, and the heroes must hurry to protect Tsukimi. Additionally, they have to make sure that Gojo Satoru is free from the Prison Realm, as he is humanity's best hope against the curses. However, it will require the heroes to convince Angel to use her power to undo the cursed technique. Choso and Yuki will also need to be on their toes as Kenjaku will most certainly try to attack Tengen for the next part of his plan.
