This article contains spoilers from Jujutsu Kaisen's Final arc.
Summary
- Sukuna Was the Strongest in the Heian Era
- Sukuna Was Brought Back in the Modern Era
- Gege Reveals Bits From Sukuna's Past
Jujutsu Kaisen ended a few months ago, but fans are still deeply invested in this story. Jujutsu Kaisen is, by far, one of the most exciting stories to have hit Jump in recent years, and much of that is down to the incredible cast of characters, which also includes compelling villains, such as Ryomen Sukuna, the King of Curses.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Gege Akutami Reveals His Original Plans For Kenjaku
Gege, the creator of JJK, reveals his original plans for one of the main villains of the series, Kenjaku.
Sukuna has always been described in the story as an absolutely monstrous individual with strength that can hardly be rivaled by any, but much about his actual past still remains shrouded in mystery, despite the story having ended. Now, Gege Akutami has shed some light on Sukuna's past from the Heian Era and explained to the fans how he ended up in the modern era and what happened to him hundreds of years ago.
Sukuna’s Untapped Past From The Heian Era

- Sukuna Was Brought Back In The Modern Era
If there's one flashback that Jujutsu Kaisen fans have always wanted, it is the Heian Era Flashback. Fans have been clamoring for it right since the very beginning of the story, hoping that Gege Akutami will, one day, tap into it and explain Sukuna's motivations and his past to them. Unfortunately, Gege did not deem it necessary to have Sukuna's past revealed to them, especially not through a flashback. Gege Akutami has revealed bits and pieces about Sukuna in the main story, but not much if it has come through flashbacks.
Throughout heaven and earth, he alone is the honored one. — Narrator on Sukuna
For instance, Gege revealed to the fans that Sukuna ate his brother in the womb, which is why he was born the way he was. Fans also know that at some point, Sukuna made a contract with Kenjaku and was turned into a cursed object. But that's not all, the additional Jujutsu Kaisen chapter gave fans a look at the first meeting of Sukuna and Uraume in the Heian era, explaining how the latter came into Sukuna's service.
The actual flashback of Ryomen Sukuna that fans wanted to see in the story never truly came, which means that a big portion of Sukuna's story will likely never be revealed to the fans, sad as that may be. However, while Gege doesn't particularly enjoy revealing flashbacks and character pasts in the story, in Q&A events, he doesn't mind answering questions about them. In the recent Jujutsu Kaisen Event that was held in Japan, Gege answered quite a few questions from the fans pertaining to the Shinjuku Showdown Arc, up to Volume 27. Among all this was also the past of Ryomen Sukuna to some extent.

Sukuna’s Body Was Dug Up, Likely By Tengen
Gege Akutami has finally explained a very important part of Sukuna's past to the fans. Here's what he had to say when asked about Sukuna's Heian past:
A body part of sorcerers who make a contract with Kenjaku bodies gets turned into cursed objects. Only Sukuna had 20 fingers. Sukuna’s body was probably taken care of by Uraume but then went missing after their death (perhaps somebody, implied to be Tengen, dug it up). Sukuna laughed at the fact his body had turned into a sokushinbutsu (mummified corpse) bc even tho he was an egotistical force of nature he was still turned into a Buddha. — Gege Akutami

Gege had some interesting plans for Sukuna originally, and it didn't involve Yuji in JJK.
As is clear from what Gege said, Uraume was the one who took care of Sukuna's corpse after his passing, but after their death, it was Tengen, most likely, who gained access to the corpse. When Sukuna found his skull, what happened became clear to him immediately, which he found amusing.
Will Sukuna Return To The Story?
Ryomen Sukuna officially died at the end of Jujutsu Kaisen, but his chances of returning are not 0. Fans know that reincarnation exists in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. If Sukuna's brother reincarnated as Wasuki Itadori, then, there is absolutely no denying the fact that Sukuna can do something similar years later.
Sukuna mentioned that he would take a different path if given an opportunity, which means that if Sukuna were to return, he would actually be a good guy in the future.
Jujutsu Kaisen’s last chapter, JJK 271, was finally released on September 29, 2024. Fans can read the series on the Manga Plus and the Shonen Jump apps.
