This article contains spoilers from the Jujutsu Kaisen series.
Jujutsu Kaisen is an absolutely massive name in the shonen genre. Fans know it to be a masterpiece of Gege Akutami, in which he explores a world where Jujutsu Sorcerers confront creepy powerful curses and cursed users. Jujutsu Kaisen has gained tremendous popularity over the years, largely thanks to its great battles, and with two seasons already out, it’s gotten so popular that fans have started reading the manga to catch up to the story.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Sukuna Was The Biggest Villain, But Gege Has Officially Replaced Him
Gege has replaced Sukuna with a bigger and stronger villain in JJK.
The JJK manga wrapped up in September 2024 with Chapter 271. But that wasn’t the end for the franchise. In September 2025, Gege Akutami actually returned with a new manga series, a sequel illustrated by Yuji Iwasaki, called Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo. As expected, the series launched in Weekly Shonen Jump, and it’s supposed to run for about six months, which accounts for three volumes in total. While the return of JJK was incredibly exciting for the fans, Gege immediately confirmed the death of a main character, Yuta Okkotsu, in the Modulo Sequel.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Confirms The Death Of Yuta Okkotsu
Yuta Okkotsu Was The Main Character Of JJK0
- Yuta was Gege's original main character
- He died after Maki's sudden death
In the very first chapter of JJK Modulo, Gege Akutami delivered massive shocks to the fans. Not only did he kill off Yuta Okkotsu, but also Maki Zenin, all of which was set up in a JJK one-shot. The Jujutsu Kaisen one-shot dropped at the end of 2024 and it had fast-forwarded the story by decades. What Jujutsu Kaisen fans noticed was that Yuta Okkotsu has two grandchildren who looked a lot like Maki Zenin and himself. It was also revealed that by then Yuta Okkotsu had become the acting leader of the Gojo Clan. Quite obviously, the Maki lookalike grandkids had people convinced that Yuta Okkotsu and she had gotten married and built a family together, and that these kids would go on to be important later on.
I want to be like Grandma Maki, and I want to be like Grandpa Yuta. — Tsurugi and Yuka Okkotsu
Later, in Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo, Gege himself finally confirmed what fans had been guessing all along, and that's the romance between Maki Zenin and Yuta Okkotsu. Gege confirmed the two actually did get married. As Gege explained, the manga had shifted eras, with the story focusing on Yuka Okkotsu and Tsurugi Okkotsu, who are Yuta and Maki’s grandchildren.
The first chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo revealed that between Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zenin, Maki was the one who passed away first. Although fans don’t know the exact details of her death yet, they clearly lived a long and fulfilling life together. Maki Zenin’s death dealt a devastating blow to Yuta Okkotsu, and that was the beginning of his decline. He was overcome with grief and slowly lost his will to live. This goes to explain why Yuta and Maki’s grandchildren, previously seen in Jujutsu Kaisen one-shot, are the focus of the JJK sequel manga.
The sorcerers have gotten weaker over the years. Are there any other strong sorcerers like Gojo Satoru and Yuji Itadori left now? — JJK Modulo Chapter 1
Here's what Gege Akutami had to say about JJK Modulo upon the announcement of its serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump:
Hello, it’s Akutami. It’s been a while. While serializing Jujutsu Kaisen, I received several offers for spinoffs written by others. However, because manga is a medium where things can easily get out of my control, I was afraid of the title spreading in ways I couldn’t manage, so at the time, I couldn’t accept those offers. But when this particular offer came, and I thought about how it might expand the main story, delve deeper into its setting, or even shift eras entirely, I realized that if it were set in a parallel line, it could open the door to many different projects. This became the spark that gave rise to ‘Mojuro,’ which originally didn’t even have a single concrete idea, and after numerous planning meetings, it finally came to life. This will be a short-term serialization, about half a year, collected in roughly 3 volumes.
The artist is the incredibly talented Yuji Iwasaki-sensei. He’s amazing!! His drawings are superb!! Truly!! I’d be very happy if you enjoy Mojuro as a new entry point into the world of jujutsu.” — Gege Akutami
Yuta Okkotsu Was Gege's Main Character Before Yuki Itadori
Yuta Has Now Left The Fans
Yuta Okkotsu is quite easily one of the best protagonists out there and he proved his importance time and again. It must be remembered that while Gege Akutami made Yuji Itadori the main protagonist of his manga, the prequel to JJK actually had Yuta Okkotsu as the protagonist. In fact, Gege himself confirmed that Yuta was supposed to be the protagonist originally, which explains his role in JJK 0.
Regardless, Yuta Okkotsu was a phenomenal character overall. Although fans didn’t like his cold personality at first, he grew on everyone over time. When Yuta Okkotsu passed away, his granddaughter Yuka was just 10 years old, and that’s about 62 years after the Culling Game. Yuta Okkotsu’s death is heartbreaking, but nonetheless, he managed to hang on for a long time, considering how short life usually is in the JJK world, and this is a win in itself.
Say Hello To Jujutsu Kaisen's New Gojo Satoru
Gojo died in JJK, but Gege just created a new Gojo in Modulo.
Quite evidently, Yuta left a really bittersweet legacy. Although he’s not actually in the JJK sequel, his name will always be tied to the series. Fans never got to see his love story play out, but they can only hope Gege throws some light on it later down the line.
JJK Continues, With Or Without Yuta Okkotsu
The Goal Is For Yuka And Tsurugi To Become Like Yuta And Maki Respectively
The world of sorcerers and curses is still alive in the Jujutsu Kaisen sequel manga, and it is safe to say that the story has lived up to every bit of the hype already. It was clear that the story of Jujutsu Kaisen had a lot to offer, and while fans never expected this world to come to an abrupt end with the conclusion of the main manga in 2024, it still has a lot to offer through Yuka and Tsurugi Okkotsu.
As fans know already, these two characters are especially important and their goals have been set by Gege Akutami now as well. With the alien invasion, it has now been confirmed that the Simurian King is actually a threat on the same level as Ryomen Sukuna, the King of Curses. No sorcerer is there to stop this threat, which is why Yuka and Tsurugi need to step up. With Yuka wanting to be like Yuta Okkotsu, and Tsurugi wanting to emulate Maki, fans have a strong basis for the Modulo sequel already. Fans can only hope that Gege doesn't drop the ball with these two characters, like he did with many others in Jujutsu Kaisen, and that the world of JJK, which still has a lot to offer, continues beyond just six months.
Jujutsu Kaisen is currently one of the biggest shonen series in the world. The manga, which ended in late 2024, can be read online for free. It is available to access on Manga Plus, where this series used to be made available weekly. Jujutsu Kaisen currently has a sequel, called Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, which runs in the Weekly Shonen Jump Magazine. Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Chapter 3 will be released on September 21, 2025. As always, fans can read the chapter for free on Manga Plus.
