The Shinjuku Showdown Arc Was Quite Intense

Jujutsu Kaisen concluded its story with the Shinjuku Showdown arc, which was, undoubtedly, the most intense arc featured in this manga. This arc comes right after Culling Game and sees the characters face off against the King of Curses, Ryomen Sukuna.

The first battle against Sukuna was the most iconic one, which featured the strongest sorcerer taking on the King of Curses, Gojo Satoru. Gojo fought well, but in the end, Gege had to take him out of the story because of how overpowered he was, one way or the other. Gege even recently revealed that Gojo only lost due to letting his guard down. In the end, Gojo died, getting cut in half by Sukuna’s attack.

After that, it was all going downhill as many sorcerers jumped in and tried to take on Sukuna, most of them failing to even cause a small dent.

Sorcerers like Yuta, Maki, Yuji, Todo, Higuruma, and many more, all took turns or allied to get a hit on this monstrous enemy. In the end, while some efforts were futile, others started to chip away at Sukuna's armor, and eventually, this set the stage for the only person who could actually take him down, the protagonist of the story, Yuji Itadori. Yuji was able to pull it off largely due to having been the vessel of Sukuna. Others helped a lot, of course, but it couldn’t have been done without Yuji, even after Yuta took over the body of Gojo Satoru and tried to unleash powerful attacks.

The Shinjuku Showdown raid will definitely go down as one of the most iconic ones in manga history, especially after it finally gets adapted into the anime despite all its flaws and fans’ complaints.

With such an intense arc, Gege recently revealed how he came up with it. Recently, the Jujutsu Kaisen series had an event. A lot was revealed there via a Q&A by Gege Akutami. This exhibition covered a lot of details concerning the Sukuna vs Gojo fight, including some other events in the manga.

One question in the Q&A stands out and gives fans an idea about how Gege Akutami came up with the Shinjuku Showdown arc. Notably, why Gege chose a raid-style battle.

The battle didn’t start as a raid as it kicked off with a one-on-one between Sukuna and Gojo. After Gojo's fall, it then switched to a raid, mainly due to Sukuna’s sheer power compared to everyone else.

Sukuna was basically jumped by every other sorcerer that was present, but as that happened, most characters had their own moment to shine in this battle against him, even though they were generally attacking him together. Gege Akutami compared it to football, where, even though it’s a team-based game, sometimes the best players shine and it seems like a 1vs1.

Q: Why did Gege choose a raid battle style against Sukuna?

A: It would’ve naturally ended up like that in a 1vs1, even if they all came at him together. Based on his experiences playing soccer, where matches often end up becoming between the best players of each team. His brother was good at soccer; Gege sucks at sports.
