Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the biggest modern shonen anime and manga series at the moment. Jujutsu Kaisen first blew up in popularity in 2020 with its first anime season, and its popularity has since exceeded all expectations.
10 Anime Almost As Iconic as One Piece
One Piece is monumental, but so are these other anime series.
While Jujutsu Kaisen is definitely one of the most talked-about anime at the moment, it’s far from being the greatest. Its quality can't be understated, but there are many new anime and old anime series that outperform it, both in terms of fights and overall storytelling.
One Piece
One Piece is one of the most recognizable and beloved series all around the world. Following the story of Monkey D. Luffy on his quest to find the One Piece, this manga has been going strong for over 28 years now, and it’s not really slowing down anytime soon.
The plot of One Piece, its characters, and the world that Oda has established are on a whole different level, especially when compared to Jujustu Kaisen. One Piece might not always have the most intense shonen battles, but everything else it offers makes up for it.
Naruto
The Naruto and Naruto Shippuden anime series are universally recognized as some of the best. The Naruto series follows the journey of Naruto Uzumaki, an orphan boy in a world of ninjas as he grows in strength to achieve his ultimate goal, to become the Hokage of his village.
It’s clear that the Jujutsu Kaisen series has taken heavy inspiration from Naruto. Yuji, Megumi, Nobara, and even Gojo are all clearly based on Naruto’s Team 7. On top of everything, Naruto features some of the best battles in shonen anime, some superior to even fights from JJK. Overall, the quality of the story is far better in Naruto.
Hunter X Hunter
When it comes to legendary shonen anime series, Hunter X Hunter is always a part of the conversation. Togashi’s work has been revolutionary and it has inspired many other mangaka who came after him, including Gege Akutami. Togashi’s HxH manga follows the story of Gon Freecs as he goes on a quest to find his father, a legendary hunter who left him years ago.
One of the many things Jujutsu Kaisen is known for is its power system. However, HxH does it far better. While cursed techniques are detailed and intricate, they pale in comparison to HxH’s Nen. Togashi has created one of the best power systems in all of anime, and it shows.
My Hero Academia
My Hero Academia is, perhaps, the most iconic superhero anime of all time. My Hero Academia follows Izuku Midoriya as he gains one of the world’s strongest Quirks after being powerless most of his life. His journey to become a great Hero has been followed by millions of fans over the years.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Every Special Grade Curse, Ranked
Special Grade curses are exceptionally powerful, and they can make short work of the best sorcerers.
Compared to JJK, My Hero Academia took more time to expand the lore of its main characters. Most JJK characters were not fleshed out properly, even those of the main cast. At the same time, the overall storywriting in My Hero Academia is far deeper.
Demon Slayer
Demon Slayer could definitely be considered the current King of anime. Both Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen started around the same time, but at the moment, it’s clear that Demon Slayer is ahead.
Demon Slayer is quite a simple story. It tells the events of Tanjiro’s life after his family was brutally murdered by the King of Demons, and his only surviving sister turned into a Demon herself. Despite its simplicity, it has quite a charm to it, and it has become one of the best-selling manga series ever, as well as one of the most successful anime as well.
Attack on Titan
Over the years, Attack on Titan has become one of the most iconic anime series of the modern era. Just like Jujutsu Kaisen, much of Attack on Titan’s appeal comes from its gruesomeness. No character in this series is safe, and anyone can die at anytime.
The Titans, gigantic human-eating creatures, definitely keep fans on the edge of their seats. Curses, in comparison, are a lot less threatening. All that aside, Attack on Titan has an incredibly deep story, and compelling characters like Eren, Levi, Erwin, Zeke, Historia, among others.
Out of the two, it is the series with the more interesting story, and it doesn’t just rely on battles to be interesting.
Bleach
If there’s one series that Gege Akutami, the creator of JJK, has quoted for being a huge inspiration for his work, it’s definitely Bleach. Without Bleach, Jujutsu Kaisen could’ve never seen the light of day. At the very least, the series would've lost a lot of what makes it as iconic as it is, such as Domain Expansions, which were inspired by Bankais.
There’s no doubt that Ichigo’s story remains one of the most influential, and one of the greatest anime series of the 2000s.
