A Binding Vow is typically a voluntary act in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen. A sorcerer restrains himself in exchange for being offered an advantage of power. A Heavenly Restriction is a Binding Vow that is imposed on one at the time of birth. It is a limitation in the most literal sense: the universe deprives the individual of something basic in body or spirit, and, in its turn, imparts a specialized, overwhelming gift. It is not a reward of hard work; it is a predestined fate that makes people live beyond the conventional rules of jujutsu.

The Man Who Broke Free From The Chains Of Fate
The best-known—and most feared type of Heavenly Restriction is the total deprivation of Cursed Energy in favor of the supernormal physical power. The very first known instance of such an extreme trade-off was that of Toji Fushiguro. With a Cursed Energy of zero, Toji was made a kind of superhuman being whose five standard senses were fine-tuned to such a degree that he could sense Curses without using any of his other senses. He had incomparable power, speed, and innate immunity to curses.
The greatest strength of this restriction is invisibility. Since Toji had no Cursed Energy, he was considered a ghost in the jujutsu world; he could not be sensed by barriers, nor could sorcerers sense his existence, with the sole exception of Satoru Gojo, of course. He was the one who actually escaped the chains of fate that all sorcerers have. This, however, came at a great social price, since he was viewed as a failure by the Zen'in Clan, resulting in the bitter resentment that was at the core of his life as the Sorcerer Killer.

Throughout the start of the series, Maki Zenin had experienced an incomplete Heavenly Restriction. Her twin status meant that, by the logic of jujutsu, twins were one and, therefore, she had a sister Mai, whose presence, and the tiny amount of Cursed Energy Mai was capable of having, were the reason Maki did not attain the level of Toji. The Cursed Energy of Maki, which had been brought down to real zero, came only when Mai, in her tragic sacrifice, was taken away. But Mai was also restricted for the same reason. Fans do wonder if Maki was the one sacrificed instead. Mai would've been given such absurd amounts of cursed energy, she could literally create any object from thin air.
Mai's sacrifice allowed her to awaken her true powers to have equal status with Toji in terms of strength, with some fans even arguing she is stronger, but that has not been officially confirmed even by the author himself. But that doesn’t change the fact that Maki became so strong she could literally withstand a black flash from the king of curses, Sukuna himself, and still come out alive. Her flaw, as well as Toji, is complete dependency on Cursed Tools to literally exorcise demons because her own body has no cursed energy to kill a Curse. Despite this, she showed that the Heavenly Restriction of a failure could bring a whole clan of elite sorcerers down by herself.

The Master of the Ultimate Puppet: Mechamaru
Vast Cursed Energy Output Paid For By A Fragile Body
At the complete opposite end is Kokichi Muta, also known as Mechamaru. His Heavenly restraint was the opposite of Toji's: his body was born weak and crippled—without limbs and having skin so sensitive that moonlight would burn him—but on the other hand, his Cursed Energy production and range were of an astronomical nature.

Kokichi would be able to project his Cursed Technique and Puppet Manipulation on the whole country of Japan, and control various mechanical bodies in a secret underground place. This limitation enabled him to hoard years of Cursed Energy which he later utilized to energize a giant mechanical suit (Ultimate Mechamaru) that could compete against a Special Grade sorcerer. His method made him almost invincible, but his own physical vulnerability was his weakness; all his life he had been confined in a bathtub of chemicals, unacquainted with the friends he so desperately wished to stand next to.
