The good news is that a long awaited follow up to 2012's Dredd is in development. The bad news is that Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley confirmed the Mega-City One TV series production has had to be put on hold due to the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Talking to the YouTube channel V2A Emergency Broadcast System, a channel dedicated to post-apocalyptic media such as Mad Max and, indeed, Dredd, Kingsley confirmed the rights to Dredd had been returned to Rebellion and scripts have been written. Expressing his desire for a sequel to the 2012 Dredd film starring Karl Urban, he stated that “Basically we can’t go into production because of the [pandemic] and we’ve got scripts and everything is ready to go but the problem is, because of the pandemic...everybody’s funding changes and everybody’s shifting around.”
Originally announced in 2017, Mega City One doesn't have any network or streaming platform distribution deal yet although discussions are continuing. No plot details are forthcoming or even if it'll be set in the same universe as the 2012 Dredd movie but Kingsley is keen to get Karl Urban back in the role.
The 2012 Dredd film was the second adaptation of the iconic British character Judge Dredd to make it to the screen, coming after the 1995 adaptation starring Sylvester Stallone as the titular Judge. The original strips of Judge Dredd introduced the world to the dystopian Mega City-1, formally the east coast of North America, crime is rife and Street Judges hand out instant sentences and often act as judge, jury, and executioner. Created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, Judge Dredd originally appeared in the long running sci-fi anthology 2000 AD in 1977.
Rebellion has owned the rights to the 2000 AD stable of characters since, appropriately enough, 2000 and has published 2 games based on fan favorite strips Judge Dredd: Dredd vs Death in 2003 and Rogue Trooper in 2006. In 2018, Rebellion bought a $100 million 220,000 square foot facility to convert into a film studio with Mega City-One set to be its first major production with Moon and Warcraft director Duncan Jones' Rogue Trooper adaptation, also set to be shot there.
