Some new leaked behind-the-scenes videos from Joker: Folie à Deux revealed a fresh look at what viewers can expect from Lady Gaga's take on Harley Quinn. If anyone was concerned whether the beloved singer would be the right fit to play the equally beloved psychotic clown, this footage might be the perfect antidote for that sentiment.Todd Phillips' upcoming highly-anticipated Joker sequel seems ready to give fans the chaotic energy they've hoped for. Aside from the return of the already unhinged title character Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), that contagious pandemonium will seemingly also cover Gaga's musically-inclined Harley Quinn. But unlike the violent tendencies of the Joker, Harley's riff on defying expectations appears to be a much less harmful method of making a statement. At least, that's how it seems for now. A recently-filmed scene from Joker 2 reveals a moment where Gaga as Harley Quinn is walking up some stairs as she's confronted, in passing, by a woman seemingly protesting her lifestyle. Gaga stops in her tracks, turns around, and plants a kiss right on the woman's lips before offering a retort. Several Twitter users (as well as Getty Images, based on the watermark) managed to capture the scene from several angles, offering the chance to make an educated guess at what's being said. The woman appears to be saying, "You're going to hell," while Gaga's response after the kiss is likely, "Now we're both going to hell."
At a glance, one might assume the woman is protesting something regarding Harley Quinn's bisexuality. Aside from the character's history with Joker, she's also arguably equally known more recently for the Harley and Poison Ivy romance that has become her decidedly less toxic option. But based on the newspaper being held by the protesting woman, it looks like her problem with Harley is more about her becoming romantically involved with Phoenix's Arthur, who is now well-known for the mayhem he caused in 2019's Joker.
A simple defiant kiss doesn't exactly go very far in showing how daring Gaga will be as Harley Quinn in Joker 2, especially since this seems to be more of a focus on her villain origin story than a redemption arc like some of the character's other stories. But it does offer an excellent look into how this version of Harley operates and thinks, and that's some pretty valuable info. There's virtually no doubt that she'll be an unambiguous villain like Arthur, but nuance is always appreciated, and this clip alone seems to offer that in spades.
Joker: Folie à Deux may very well be different from its predecessor, especially since it appears to be a musical. But given this leaked clip and the mention of another Batman villain set to appear in Joker 2, it looks like that theme of destructive rebellion is well intact. Here's hoping it's just as fun of a watch as the previous film.
Joker: Folie à Deux is set to release in theaters on October 4th, 2024.
