These Devices Strangely Work For The Series

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, unlike other manga and anime, is broken down into multiple mini-series known as parts. Each part of JoJo’s follows a different member of the Joestar bloodline going on a grand, and often strange, quest. For example, while Part 1: Phantom Blood follows the rivalry between Jonathan Joestar and Dio, Part 2: Battle Tendency follows his grandson, Joseph Joestar, fighting against the ancient beings called the Pillar Men.

Due to this, although every JoJo’s part has a fairly consistent style, the genre, setting, and tone can change drastically from part to part. Although this is something that many fans love about the series, sometimes, it can create a few issues in the consistency of the series. Mainly, when creating these big changes between parts, certain elements need to be retconned to make the newest part make sense, one of which is the introduction of a new JoJo.

In a Reddit post by nishikinomak1, one fan shares that their least favorite plot device is introducing Josuke as Joseph’s son. At this point in the series, it was clear that Araki wasn’t looking for another time skip between parts, yet he still needed another JoJo to be the protagonist of Part 4. To solve this, he reveals in Part 4 that Joseph had an affair in Japan which led to the birth of Josuke. Although this was an interesting way to introduce the character to the family, some fans felt that it ruined Joseph’s character for them.

Another plot device from JoJo’s that some fans hate is how they treated Straizo after Part 1. After Straizo helped out fighting Dio initially as a strong Hamon user, the heroic figure turned to vampirism in order to gain true immortality. Although Straizo was a fairly small character, some fans thought his sudden change was unearned, and only used for exposition to introduce the Pillar Men, and deemed it an unfitting end to the character. However, at the same time, other fans feel that the series didn't originally explore Straizo's character nearly enough to make this sudden turn seem unwarranted.

One Fan Thinks Requiem Stands Came Out Of Nowhere

Finally, another fan admits that they disliked the concept of Requiem Stands in general, stating that the concept felt like it came out of nowhere. In Part 5, it is revealed that if a Stand touches the Stand Arrow, it can evolve into a Requiem Stand, gaining an intense new ability. However, this Reddit user feels that using this strange new Stand power that is never mentioned again felt like a cheap way to end Part 5.

In the end, while JoJo’s is a great series in general, there are definitely some weird plot devices that leave fans scratching their heads. Still, JoJo’s is an amazing experience and well worth watching for its unique style and fantastic characters. Overall, these smaller plot devices aren’t nearly as bad when they’re surrounded by such a great story.
