How To Play Wordle

Wordle is a word game that pits players against a mystery five-letter word once a day. While originally made by an indie developer, it was purchased by the New York Times Games about a year ago. There are loads of Wordle copycats and clones out there, but the NYT's version is the original and the subject of this article. Other Wordles and Wordle-like games will have different answers and can have slightly different rules.

Once players are in the right location, they will next need to choose a starting Wordle word. All Wordle answers:

Needs to be five letters long.
Needs to be a real non-proper noun English word.
Will be the American spellings of words.
Will never be a previous Wordle answer.
Will never be a plural noun ending in S or ES.
Will never be one of the offensive and non-American words removed by the New York Times when it purchased the game.

Take the chosen starting word and type it into the top row of the Wordle grid. Press enter, and watch the colors of the letters change colors.

Green letters - right
Gray letters - wrong
Yellow letters - right but in the wrong position in the word

Given these clues, try new words and get even more color-coded clues. Players have a total of six guesses to get to the answer before they lose the game. The puzzle resets at midnight local time.
