Summary

  • The hashtag campaign for the release of the Ayer cut of Suicide Squad gained significant support and trended at 44k.
  • David Ayer claims that a secret second edit of Suicide Squad was released behind his back, changing the tone of the film.
  • James Gunn has promised Ayer that his cut of Suicide Squad will have its time to be shared, but it may not happen until after Gunn launches his own DC universe.

Fan campaigns for the hashtag to release the Ayer cut of Suicide Squad trended at 44k this past weekend with support from Alex Ross, Wayne T. Carr, and David Ayer. However, most notable was Ayer expressing that he had spoken to James Gunn about releasing his true version of Suicide Squad.

According to Ayer, WB released a secret second edit of Suicide Squad behind the director’s back, just like what happened to Zack Snyder with his cut of Justice League, which significantly changed the tone of Suicide Squad to accommodate a demographic that the studio thought would be the most profitable. Thankfully, there is hope that the Ayer cut will release, but it is attached to a significant caveat by the new DC Studios CEO, Gunn.

Ayer previously spoke to Gunn about Suicide Squad, expressing that he “has the right to put together his new universe before visiting the past” and that “good things are coming.” A new update from Ayer reiterates that Gunn told him that the Ayer cut “would have its time to be shared” and that he “absolutely deserves to launch his DC universe without more drama about old projects.” The official account for the Ayer Cut had reinforced this, stating that they have spoken to Ayer about “the eventual release of the cut,” and without revealing too much, that things are “positive behind the scenes.”

Ayer has been the target of internet trolls. As the demand grows for the Ayer cut of Suicide Squad, so do its outspoken critics that subject animosity toward the director for wanting his true version of the film to release. In the same post that revealed further details on what is happening behind the scenes, Ayer also says that his “unseen film plays much better than the studio release” and that the interest in his “cut being shown seems real and organic,” despite “another group of people that have fun mocking the film.”

It seems there are plans to release the Ayer cut, but there is no time frame attached to this, as Gunn wants to launch his DCU first, which could be as far out as 2025 for the release of Superman: Legacy, if not further. Some fans have made their case, stating that there is no better time than now to release it because of not only the WGA Strike creating a draught in movies but as DC Studios CEO, it would be in good faith and make more sense to first heal old wounds before rebooting the franchise, rather than awkwardly returning to the Ayer cut amid the DCU reboot. Ayer is hopeful that his Suicide Squad cut releases, based on conversations with Gunn, but what is in Gunn's mind when making such a promise remains to be seen.

Suicide Squad is available on MAX.
