Director James Gunn is known for being active on social media. He often answers fan questions online and gives updates about his upcoming projects to his followers. In his latest unofficial Q&A session, the filmmaker has revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is almost done filming. With just a week of filming to go, the team is almost ready to wrap up, which means the reel can then head towards post-production.
The last film in the franchise was released five years ago, and fans are now ready for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to arrive. Even though they still have to wait another year, the news of filming being almost complete has been welcomed by fans, as it means that the project is one step closer to its May 2023 release. While post-production might take some time, fans are confident that Gunn will keep them updated throughout the process.
Over the weekend, Gunn shared a throwback image from 2016 on his official Instagram account. It featured actor Laura Haddock, who played Peter Quill's mother Meredith in Guardians of the Galaxy, posing with Gunn's own mother. His mother, he claims, was the inspiration for the role. Another image in the same post shows Gunn and Gregg Henry posing with a faux poster of Nathan Fillion supposedly being cast as Simon Williams. This poster is what began the conversation among fans and led to the big reveal that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is nearing completion.
Instagram user @noah.e211 asked Gunn whether he had a role planned for Fillion for the third Guardians installment. Fillion is one of Gunn's closest friends, and the filmmaker has revealed in previous interviews that he is a part of most of his projects. However, fans should not expect a Fillion cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. To answer the fan’s question, Gunn responded, “Well if I did it would be far past planned since we only have 8 more days of shooting.” This is clearly the last week of filming for the crew, and Fillion is nowhere in sight.
The wait for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been a long one. By the time the film releases, there will be a six-year gap since the previous installment in the franchise. The delay in filming was due to Gunn's departure from the project after he was fired by Disney in 2018 over some offensive posts on Twitter. The director was later re-hired for the project, but he had already signed up with DC for The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker by then. He vowed to return to Guardians once both those projects were completed, and stuck to his word.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled to premiere in theaters on May 5, 2023.
