The soundtrack for James Gunn's festive new Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special has officially been revealed. Gunn's films have always had a knack for picking the perfect licensed music to accompany their wacky and heartfelt antics, and it looks like this one is following that sacred tradition. As with most of his movies, Gunn got to personally curate the soundtrack for the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, offering audiences a little glimpse into how his mind works. These tracks tend to include more retro hits of yore and lesser-known contemporary bangers, as seen in the addictive opening credits for Peacemaker. So like how the first 2 Guardians of the Galaxy entries stood above many of their contemporaries in the sound department, the holiday special will include plenty of classic hits to keep viewers feeling festive and maybe slightly superior when they recognize a tune their younger friends haven't heard. Gunn revealed his chosen tracks for the album on his Twitter, sharing them in an appropriately festive manner pasted over the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special promo image of Drax and Mantis passed out on a sidewalk. The list includes several artists that many have come to expect from the director, such as Hanoi Rocks. But it also includes classics like "Christmas Wrapping" from The Waitresses and more debatable classics such as "Christmastime" by The Smashing Pumpkins. Anyone familiar with Gunn's style is likely unsurprised (but satisfied) with these musical choices.[EMBED_TWITTER]https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/1595133214737080320[/EMBED_TWITTER][EMBED_TWITTER]https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/1595437017906614272[/EMBED_TWITTER][EMBED_TWITTER]https://twitter.com/JamesGunn/status/1595100331717033985[/EMBED_TWITTER]Some will also take note of alt-country group Old 97's, who contributed two entries to the soundtrack. There are also brand new songs made exclusively for the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, with collaboration from Gunn himself and even Kevin Bacon. As if this anachronistic soundtrack wasn't already impressive enough, the special will also feature the Old 97's themselves as an alien band trying to figure out what Christmas means to humans. Chalk up one more aspect of this project that oozes Gunn's charm.Gunn also took to Twitter to answer a fan question about which films would be necessary to view leading up to the Holiday Special. "None are must see, including the Guardians films," he clarified. "BUT the two Guardians movies, Infinity War, and Endgame all have small amounts of information in them that are referenced." So anybody who wants the full experience may want to brush up beforehand. But luckily, it looks like those who don't want to or don't have the time won't have to worry. It looks like the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will offer plenty of what fans have come to expect from Gunn films but with perhaps a smaller dose of the intensity seen in his less family-friendly projects like The Suicide Squad and a little more cozy holiday cheer. Now, all that's left is to wait for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to see what his final Marvel entry holds for eager fans. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is available on Disney Plus as of November 25th, 2022.
