Insomniac Games has long been an industry powerhouse. Rising to prominence with the likes of Spyro the Dragon and Ratchet & Clank, the studio is now best known for the heavy-hitting Marvel's Spider-Man series, which has played a major role in beefing up Sony's modern portfolio of exclusive titles. 2025 will see the company continue this trend of commercially successful ventures, but some meaningful surprises could be in store as well.
Insomniac has been playing its cards close to its chest since its November 2023 leaks: the company was hacked by Rhysida, a notable ransomware group, which resulted in a massive data breach, pulling back the curtain on a number of internal documents, videos, and more. The full extent of this leak's impact likely won't be known for a while still, but it's likely to have influenced the developer's marketing plans for confirmed projects like Marvel's Wolverine. It also unveiled information about upcoming projects that haven't been officially announced, painting a blurry image of the company's short-term future.
Insomniac Games' Lineup Leak is Bad For Classic Fans
As great as they may be for fans of Insomniac’s newer projects, the studio’s recent leaks also paint a disappointing picture for its old school fans.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Will Be Coming to PC This Month
As uncertain as the future of Insomniac's output may be, one thing about its 2025 plans is certain: Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will be coming to PC on January 30. Spider-Man 2 builds upon the strengths of its two predecessors, expanding its map of New York City to include Brooklyn and offering new traversal and combat mechanics, like the Web Wings and parry. For many, it is the definitive modern Spider-Man game, so it should be a welcome addition to any PC gamer's portfolio.
This will be the third Marvel's Spider-Man game to receive a PC port post-launch, which aligns with Sony's broader release trends. Hit titles like God of War Ragnarok and Ghost of Tsushima have made their way to PC as well, and with Marvel's Spider-Man 2 being the last Marvel's Spider-Man game, possibly for a while, maybe 2025 will also shed light on Insomniac's broader PC release plans, specifically as they pertain to upcoming titles.
Insomniac May Pull Back the Curtain On Venom: Lethal Protector
Long-rumored and unofficially confirmed through the 2023 leaks, Insomniac's standalone Venom game could be released sometime this year. Referred to as Venom: Lethal Protector, and likely borrowing from the comic of the same name, this Venom spin-off was planned for a 2025 release, per the leaked info. With DLC for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 being canceled, and Marvel's Wolverine not coming until 2026, 2025 would be the most opportunity to focus on this Venom project. While a 2025 release date for the game could be dubious in the wake of the data breach, a reveal of Lethal Protector could be in the cards this year, as it would help to define the next steps for Insomniac's broader Marvel portfolio.
2025 May Be the Year that Insomniac Shows More Marvel's Wolverine Footage
Marvel's Wolverine was announced during a PlayStation showcase in September 2021, but it's been crickets since then. Aside from a few bits of cursory information, like that Marvel's Wolverine takes place in the same universe as Marvel's Spider-Man, most of what players know about the game has come from the aforementioned data breach rather than from any official statements from Insomniac itself. With the only real look at the game being from very rough early development footage, Insomniac would do well to change the narrative with an actual gameplay reveal sometime this year. After all, if 2025 ends without a look at the game, there will have been four years of radio silence which, while not unprecedented in the industry, isn't typically what studios strive for when marketing a highly anticipated title.
