The Insidious horror franchise is one of the most popular, and Insidious: Chapter 2 is just as eerie as the movies that came before and after. The original was a huge hit when it came out in 2010, and after the sequel, the prequel Insidious: Chapter 3 came out in 2015. Insidious: The Red Door features events that happen right after the end of Insidious: Chapter 2 and is doing really well at the box office in the summer of 2023.

Insidious is one of the most compelling Blumhouse horror franchises and has no shortage of fans. Each movie explores the plight of the Lambert family and shows the emotional core of Renai (Rose Byrne) and Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson), a couple who wants nothing more than to live a regular life. What is Insidious 2 about and how does the ending lead into Insidious: The Red Door?

Insidious: Chapter 2 opens with Lorraine Lambert (Barbara Hershey) concerned that Josh (Patrick Wilson) keeps seeing an elderly woman's ghost in 1986. She realizes that she doesn't want him to be able to astrally project anymore, and she can tell that something paranormal is in their house. Elise Rainier (Lin Shayne) is helping Josh deal with this scary situation. While there are some poorly crafted 2010s horror movies, every installment in the Insidious franchise is unnerving enough to keep audiences hooked.

In 2011, Renai is married to Josh and they have a family. The couple moves their kids Kali (Madison and Brynn Bowie), Foster (Andrew Astor), and Dalton (Ty Simpkins) into the home where Lorraine lived. Their lives are in turmoil as the house is haunted. And to make matters worse, Elise has passed away and Josh might be charged. This ups the tension and proves that life is never easy for this family.

Renai sees a ghost wearing a white dress and is understandably terrified. There are some terrifying horror movie demons in each installment in the Insidious franchise and that includes in Insidious: Chapter 2. The couple hires Tucker (Angus Sampson) and Specs (Leigh Whannell) to look into what's going on in their home. Insidious: Chapter 2 follows the family's desire to stop an evil spirit from harming Josh and ruining their lives.

Part of the movie is set in The Further, which is another dimension. The Further is a big part of Insidious: The Red Door. It's a mysterious place, and it always seems like the characters can get stuck there forever. If it wasn't for The Further, Insidious: Chapter 2 might join the ranks of overrated haunted house horror movies. But The Further adds a unique element. It's also smart to have Josh end up in another place other than the main setting. This proves that he is intensely connected to the spirit world and this sets him apart from his family members.

How Does Insidious 2 End?

The Insidious: Chapter 2 ending sees Josh possessed by a demon. This makes the sequel one of the best horror movies about demonic possession. When Dalton goes to The Further so he can see his dad, Josh and Dalton see the woman in a white dress and learn that she is an abusive mother named Michelle Crane (Danielle Bisutti). Elise stops Michelle and this allows Josh to get his body back and enter the real world again.

The final scene of Insidious: Chapter 2 features a young Jenna Ortega as Annie. Her sister Allison (Dannay Rodriguez) is in a coma and Tucker and Specs arrive at their family home to help. It's clear that Annie is the only one who can see the ghost of Elise and it seems that Annie is capable of astral projection. Offscreen, a ghost comes toward Annie, and audiences hear some creaking.

Insidious: Chapter 2 is one of Jenna Ortega's best horror movies and she showed her impressive acting talents as a young child. When Annie asks if the others can see a woman standing behind them, it's clear that she has the same connection as Josh to demons. And it's clear that her life will, unfortunately, be as difficult as Josh's. If it wasn't for this scene, the ending of Insidious: Chapter 2 might not be quite as unforgettable.

The Insidious: Chapter 2 ending also leads into Insidious: The Red Door. In the fifth movie in the franchise, Dalton is going to college and he and Josh end up having a horrifying experience. This is smart since the father and son did spend time in The Further in the horror movie sequel, and this storyline ties the two movies together. While some horror movies didn't need sequels, every entry in the Insidious franchise is compelling in its own right. That includes Insidious: Chapter 2, which has a mysterious ending and makes it easy to want to watch the next movie.
