Almost a decade after the release of the first film, Pixar’s Inside Out 2 came smashing into theaters in 2024, claiming both critical acclaim and box office dollars. Given the film’s success, all eyes are on Pixar to see whether there will be an Inside Out 3.
The Inside Out franchise is an exploration of the thoughts and emotions that occur in humans while growing up, all presented in a classic Pixar animated style. Inside Out 2 brings back the character of Riley, and her emotions Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust, who are forced to reckon with some life changes when Riley hits puberty and several new emotions establish themselves at headquarters. Inside Out 2 was released on June 14, and it quickly shot to the top of the box office, as well as a 90% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s since claimed the spot of the highest-grossing film of the year to date, raking in just shy of 1.7 billion dollars. Surely, that means it won’t take another decade for Inside Out 3?

Inside Out 2 Director Addresses Potential For A Sequel
Inside Out 2 director Kelsey Mann addressed this question in a recent interview with Empire Magazine. Knowing what Pixar has on its slate for the future, Mann said the studio was trying to strike the right balance of original ideas and franchise installments. She also provided an update on internal sentiment towards making an Inside Out 3, which is that “people are pretty open” to doing a third film. “They want to make sure that we do it justice. But people are excited for seeing Riley’s life — her whole life. They want to see Riley grow up,” Mann said. The director added that no talks about Inside Out 3 had been conducted yet, due to Mann taking some time off after Inside Out 2 was completed.

The first Inside Out movie visited Riley at a critical moment in her pre-teen life, as she experienced the difficulties of moving across the country and having to start again at a new school. Inside Out 2 then picked up with Riley at high school as she attempted to fit in and deal with the conflicting emotions of puberty. There are endless possibilities for potential themes or emotional conflicts that Inside Out 3 could explore, perhaps following Riley into her college years or as a young adult.
Inside Out Will Have A Future In New Disney+ Show
The future of Inside Out isn’t completely uncertain, however. Pixar is preparing to release a streaming series on Disney+ titled Dream Productions, which is a spin-off set in the world of Inside Out. The series will take place in the part of Riley’s mind that produces dreams every night, following the director, Paula, as she teams up with a new daydream director to try and make Riley’s dreams each night successful. The series includes the voice talents of Paula Pell and Richard Ayoade. Dream Productions is set to release on December 11, 2024, which should at least temporarily ease the wait until there is more news on Inside Out 3.
