The Injustice franchise just got its most significant update in a long time, as DC Studios leaders James Gunn and Peter Safran have confirmed that they have been in conversation with developers NetherRealm and Rocksteady. Injustice brings the DC hero roster into the fighting genre, and many fans have been awaiting a third entry for a while now.

While nothing official has been confirmed, ComicBook.com recently attended a special DC Studios panel where Gunn and Safran discussed working with NetherRealm and Rocksteady. Despite no mention of official projects that are potentially in early development stages, the DC Studios duo confirming that NetherRealm has been part of these discussions is a promising sign that Injustice 3 could be in the works.

Even if It’s Not an Injustice Game, It May Be For The Best if NetherRealm’s Next Game Isn’t Mortal Kombat

With Mortal Kombat 1 being in a divisive state at the moment, developer NetherRealm may find stronger footing with its next project.

James Gunn and Peter Safran Hint at the Possibility of Injustice 3

When discussing working with JB Perrette, CEO and President of WB's Global Streaming and Games division, Safran stated, "James and I sit with the guys that run the studios under JB, whether it’s NetherRealm or Rocksteady. We sit with them, and we talk about characters and stories that we’re interested in and that they’re interested in.” Adding to the conversation, Gunn was quoted as saying, "We see designs for the projects in their very earliest stages. We talk about those, we talk about what the story might be, and we’ll say, ‘Well, maybe you want to go this way because we’re planning on maybe doing something with this character.'" It's a fascinating insight into how closely Safran and Gunn are working with WB's various visions, and some of these statements could definitely hint at possible directions for Injustice 3.

James Gunn and Peter Safran were first hired to lead DC Studios back in November 2022.

The New DCU Could Influence Injustice 3

Gunn's statements about giving developers advice on which direction to steer toward based on his and Safran's story plans could mean Injustice 3 is likely to be influenced by upcoming movies and TV series. Injustice is a darker take on the DC heroes, and while this tone hopefully stays intact, it's also compelling to imagine how Gunn and Safran's choices could inspire the next chapter.

One of the most likely ways Gunn and Safran could inspire Injustice 3 is through its characters. Ever since the team took the reins of DC Studios, there has been a fun blend of staple heroes mixed with less well-known characters. The first official project to be released in Gunn's DCU was the recent Creature Commandos series, and this continued embrace of deep-cut names is bound to inform Injustice 3's character roster.

Gunn and Safran's first major DCU project, Superman, is scheduled to be released in theaters this summer. As of now, the film is slated for a July 11 premiere. The film stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

We see designs for the projects in their very earliest stages.

There Will Hopefully Be Good Injustice News in the Near Future

Although Creature Commandos is out on streaming, the ultimate test of Gunn and Safran's DC venture will be the upcoming Superman movie. If successful, the duo could be set to head DC Studios for years down the road, and it only makes sense for WB-owned studios like NetherRealm and Rocksteady to play a role in that future, as well. Of course, only time will tell if Injustice 3 gets to become a reality, but these comments from Gunn and Safran are at least a small hint at something potentially promising on the horizon. Neither developer has confirmed the next project in store for gamers, but whenever that day finally comes, Injustice 3 will hopefully be included in those plans.
