Summary

  • A MultiVersus dataminer recently hinted that Injustice 3 may be in development at NetherRealm Studios.
  • NetherRealm recently released Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition, prompting many to believe that the studio won't release any more content for the fighting game.

NetherRealm could be working on the third Injustice game, at least according to a MultiVersus dataminer. Combining the 2D fighting action NetherRealm is renowned for with the heroes and villains of DC Comics, the original Injustice: Gods Among Us presented an alternate continuity in which Superman and other members of the Justice League turned to the dark side, creating an oppressive regime opposed by Batman and his allies. To date, Injustice has a sequel, multiple tie-in comics, and even an animated movie adaptation.

A third Injustice game has been rumored for some time, and this speculation will surely intensify now that fans think NetherRealm might be finished with Mortal Kombat 1. Earlier this month, NetherRealm released Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition, a repackage of 2023’s fighting game reboot that includes all of its post-launch DLC so far. While this doesn’t necessarily mean that NetherRealm is done making content for Mortal Kombat 1, hardcore fans are worried that there won’t be a third DLC character pack or additional story content.

Injustice 3 would probably be a welcome sight for DC fans, but it's not the only way to give those fans another fighting game to play.

On the other hand, this might free up NetherRealm to make the long-awaited Injustice 3, and VGC reports that one unlikely source has suggested that it could be on the way. MultiVersus dataminer MultiverSusie recently took to Twitter to complain about how the game shutting down for the first time in 2023 was an “injustice.” They added that MultiVersus shutting down again at the end of May is another “injustice,” then noted that being left without any new leaks to share is a third “injustice.” MultiverSusie followed up with another post consisting solely of the number 3, implying that their repeated use of the word “injustice” was deliberate on their part.

Injustice 3 Could Be in Development

While MultiverSusie is largely known for sharing leaks about MultiVersus, both it and the Injustice series are published by WB Games and even share a few playable characters from the DC universe. As such, it stands to reason that MultiverSusie could have come across information pointing to Injustice 3 being in development at NetherRealm, though it should be pointed out that nothing has been officially confirmed yet and that any claims should be taken with a grain of salt for now.

2017’s Injustice 2 left room to continue the franchise’s alternate universe storyline, and there are still plenty of popular DC heroes and villains that could be added to a third game’s roster. With the future of Mortal Kombat 1 in question and WB Games announcing a renewed focus on Batman and other DC superheroes, now might be the time for NetherRealm to flash the Batsignal a third time and pit the forces of the Regime and Insurgency against each other for the fate of Earth 49 once again.
