Summary

  • A player discovered a bug in Indiana Jones that stuck them in third-person view.
  • This created problems with the gameplay, though some fans were impressed with how it looked.
  • MachineGames is actively fixing bugs, with the latest update improving visuals for Xbox players.

One Indiana Jones and the Great Circle player has discovered a third-person view mode in the game, allegedly due to a bug. Similar to developer MachineGames's previous titles, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is primarily a first-person view game, with only certain actions switching the camera to a third-person perspective during gameplay.

Since hitting the shelves on December 9, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle—Bethesda's latest AAA release—has received a very positive reception, with praise directed towards its story in particular. Excitingly, publisher Bethesda Softworks isn't quite done with the action-adventure title yet, as plans for a DLC expansion have previously been confirmed. Beyond that, Lucasfilm—owner of the Indiana Jones IP—has talked about a potential sequel to the Swedish developer's Indiana Jones game, possibly coming in the future.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Is a First-Person Game, But It’s Still a Third-Person Story

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle immerses players in first-person gameplay, and yet unfolds its narrative through third-person storytelling.

Recently, Reddit user theraineydaze shared an alleged bug encounter in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle that left them "stuck" in the third-person view. In the video, the titular protagonist can be seen engaging in different actions, ranging from rowing a boat to swimming, from the third-person camera perspective. While the leg animations in third-person view seem noticeably wonky when moving or turning on foot, other actions such as swimming and climbing appear to be free of these issues. One of the comments noted this, saying, "Not as janky as you might expect...," whereas another person said that it wasn't "lookin’ bad at all." Interestingly, as shown in the clip, the third-person camera bug stays intact even when Indiana Jones uses the fast travel feature to load a new location.

Apparently, user theraineydaze was stuck with the third-person view for their entire session. Talking about how the bug was triggered, they recalled traveling in their boat before "squeezing" through a narrow passage "between two ruins." They continued that the camera "popped out" at that point and wouldn't revert to first-person view until they loaded their old save file. Underlining their imperfect experience playing through the issue, the Indiana Jones and the Great Circle player said that the game became "unplayable" while the bug was still in effect. They argued that this was because the camera wouldn't "move naturally" in the current state of the game's third-person view.

In the meantime, MachineGames has been working on fixing such bugs and further improving the experience for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle players. So far, the studio has shipped two major updates, the second of which enabled Xbox owners to get noticeably enhanced visuals on their Indiana Jones-led escapade.
