The first-person shooter genre has remained one of the most popular in the gaming space ever since its initial debut all the way back in the 1990s with games like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake. Huge franchises like Call of Duty, Halo, and Battlefield all put their own unique spin on the first-person shooter genre, and have done for the past two decades. But just when it seems like the FPS genre has reached its limits, a game like Immortals of Aveum comes around, proving that the genre is still capable of learning a few new tricks.

Being published by EA, Immortals of Aveum is a brand new IP from first-time developer Ascendant Studios. But while this is technically Ascendant Studios' first game as a team, it's far from the first game its individual employees have worked on, with veteran devs from Sledgehammer Games, Bungie, and more all coming over to work at Ascendant. Available on August 22, Immortals of Aveum will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, and it's definitely an FPS to watch out for, blending the intense arena-shooting gameplay of Doom with a Doctor Strange-esque magic combat system.

Set on the titular world of Aveum, Immortals of Aveum sees players take on the role of Jak, an orphan that grew up with no magical powers, but has since developed them later in life. When players begin Immortals of Aveum, they'll find themselves in the middle of the Everwar, a battle between the five kingdoms of Aveum for rule over the planet's innate magical source, located at the heart of a deep chasm in the center of the planet called the Wound. By the time players take control of Jak, the Everwar has been raging for millennia, and just two kingdoms remain: Lucium and Rasharn.

With it being his home, Jak is on the side of Lucium, and despite the wishes of the older magical nobility, Jak is accepted into the Order of Immortals, which is essentially the magical special forces of Lucium. Jak soon finds out that he's a Triarch Magnus, a rare type of sorcerer that's capable of wielding all three different types of Aveum magic, all designated by a unique blue, green, or red color. Together with the help of the other Immortals, players will need to save Lucium and put a stop to the evil Rasharn leader Sandrakk's plans.

Immortals of Aveum is a first-person shooter with some light RPG elements thrown in for good measure. The general moment-to-moment gameplay of Immortals of Aveum will see players enter an arena and battle a horde of foes using a slew of different magical abilities. Over the course of the game, players will unlock a total of 25 unique spells, ranging from offensive attacks that mimic a magical shotgun burst or machine gun fire to powerful abilities like homing missiles and shockwaves to defensive spells that block and parry oncoming attacks. By stringing all of these magic spells together, players can deliver some devastatingly stylish combos.

Immortals of Aveum also boasts an extensive skill tree, with over 80 unique Talents to unlock, each one presumably adding a new ability or skill to the player's arsenal. On top of the skill tree, players will also be able to find a number of gear items during their journey, ranging from Sigils that boost Jak's magical abilities and rings that transform Jak's grenade-like power to totems that offer mobility boosts and bracers that boost Jak's defensive capabilities.

Immortals of Aveum launches on August 22, 2023, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
