Immortals of Aveum is a shooter, but it also revolves around magic. Players can equip special gauntlets called Sigils in Immortals of Aveum to alter their magic in the game. There are three types to choose from: Red, Blue, and Green. Red, for example, is a more aggressive type of magic.

All three types of magic have a skill tree associated with them, and skills in this game are called Talents. Characters don't level up upon completing quests or defeating enemies like in other RPGs. They instead earn points to buy Talents in these skill trees. So, of the many Talents in Immortals of Aveum, these are the ones to get to as fast as possible.

8 Greater Vial

Greater Vial in Immortals of Aveum

Greater Vial is a Talent under the Green Magic skill tree. It allows Jak to cast another Limpet at a consecutive time. Limpets are one of the Totems that players can use throughout the game, which are secondary spells assigned to the D-Pad of the controller. Limpets, when they attach to certain enemies, will slow them down. If an enemy has a shield up or if a boss is too strong, the Limpet will not work. There are limitations, but it is still a strong spell/tool in the game.

7 Living Explosion

There is another use for Limpets, and it is one of the few examples in the game where magic can fuse with others to create something new. If players use a Red Magic attack on a Limpet, such as Burstfire, the Limpet will become infused and explode after a short time. With the Living Explosion Talent, under the Red Magic skill tree, these explosions will heal Jak for 5% of his health. The more Limpets and explosions occur, the more Jak will heal. This elemental combo system is reminiscent of Scars Above, which is another sci-fi shooter from 2023.

6 Mana Well

Mana Well in Immortals of Aveum

Players can fire spells from the aforementioned Sigils in Immortals of Aveum. Besides having to reload spells like one would a gun in a shooter, there is no limit to how many times players can fire them. There are stronger spells that require the standard RPG element of Mana, though, called Furies.

Mana Well is a Green Magic Talent that can restore one meter of the Fury bar passively. There are ways to speed up the regeneration process and ways to heal more bars as well if players further explore this skill tree. Mana Well is a good start, though.

Greater Blink in Immortals of Aveum

There are two ways players can avoid damage in the game. Three if one wants to count running away from an encounter, but that’s kind of a natural instinct in most shooters. First, players have an ability called Blink which they can use to dash away from an attack. It’s a lot like the Blink skill in Dishonored, except that players can’t teleport themselves at as great a distance in Immortals of Aveum. Players begin with one Blink deposit for Jak, but Greater Blink, another Green Magic Talent, will unlock an additional Blink slot so that players can dash twice as much.

4 Hardened Shield

Hardened Shield in Immortals of Aveum

The other way to avoid damage in the game, and perhaps the best way, is by putting a Shield spell. Unlike most shields in games and other media, this spell will dissipate after receiving too much damage. Like Jak as a whole, Shield has a life bar, and Hardened Shield is a Blue Magic Talent that will increase its health by 20%. There are additional Talents to further increase the defensive capabilities of Shield, and they should be prioritized by players. With Shield and Blink maximized, it will be harder for players to die in the game.

3 Safeguard

Safeguard in Immortals of Aveum

Health and Mana can be increased by defeating bosses, finding treasures in secret trials called Shroudfanes in Immortals of Aveum, or buying upgrades from the Forge. These are important stats to keep track of in the game, but so is Armor. That is the defensive stat for Jak in the game.

Equipping new Sigils or other pieces of gear can help increase armor. Safeguard is a Red Magic Talent that can increase the Armor stat permanently by 15. Like most of the Talents on the board, there are more slots open to increase Armor further.

2 Siphon Shield

Siphon Shield in Immortals of Aveum

Siphon Shield is a great Talent to get along with Hardened Shield to make the best use of Shield in Immortals of Aveum. Every time an enemy attack hits the spell, it will heal Jak for 25% of the damage Shield receives. It may not seem like much, but every bit helps. On the higher difficulties, players have to be careful with their Healing Crystals as they are limited. So, the more ways players can heal in nonconventional ways, like through the Green Magic Talent of Siphon Shield, the better.

1 Red Acolyte

Red Acolyte in Immortals of Aveum

Red Acolyte is a Red Magic Talent that will increase all Red Magic power by 20%. There are more slots to unlock in this skill tree, and the other two magic skill trees have Acolyte upgrades as well. Sigils will increase damage for spells like Burstfire, as a Red Magic example. That’s good when finding a new Sigil to equip, but gaining these Acolyte upgrades will show players a greater difference in power. Sometimes a single upgrade can be like the difference between night and day in battle.

Immortals of Aveum was released on August 22, 2023, and is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
