Immortals of Aveum tells the story of Jak, a powerful magic-wielder who decides to participate in the Everwar, an age-old conflict in which each side fights for control of magic. As a first-person shooter, much of the game's combat relies on aiming and firing, but the diverse magic system also encourages players to use other means to defeat Jak's foes.

While playing through Immortals of Aveum, Jak will discover a range of magical abilities that he can make use of in combat. At the beginning of the game, he will be bombarded with a wide assortment of new powers, and it can be a little challenging for players to get used to them, given how quickly they're obtained. One ability Jak gains access to during the early hours of Immortals of Aveum is Shred, and though it can take some getting used to, it is extremely effective when dealing with defensive enemies.

What Does Shred Do?

Jak will unlock the Shred ability shortly into Immortals of Aveum's third chapter; once it has been acquired, players can use it to break through enemy-summoned shields.

If an enemy has summoned a shield during a fight, it's not uncommon for other nearby enemies to seek shelter behind it, too. This can make dealing with large groups especially difficult, but thankfully, the Shred ability, when used correctly, can quickly even the odds.

How To Use Shred In Immortals Of Aveum

The Shred description in Immortals of Aveum

To break through an enemy's shields with the Shred ability, players must first identify the enemy's Defense Spell. Then, they must match Jak's magic color with the Defense Spell and begin firing at the shield using one of Jak's Sigils. Blue Defense Spells can be broken with Blue Sigil Magic, Green Defense Spells can be broken with Green Sigil Magic, and Red Defense Spells can be broken with Red Sigil Magic. Once the targeted shield receives enough damage from Jak's Sigil attacks, it will shatter, exposing the enemies who were gathered behind it.

It's possible to break an enemy's shield even by relying on the wrong colored magic, but this method will take a lot longer as Jak's damage output won't be as high as it would be with the correct Sigil magic. Players can also bypass the need to break enemy shields by walking around the shield and dealing with the enemies that way. This method can leave Jak open to attack and should only really be used if players feel they are safe to do so.

Immortals of Aveum is available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
