Summary

  • EA removed Denuvo from Immortals of Aveum, which should please PC gamers.
  • Immortals of Aveum struggled financially and critically after release.
  • Despite the removal of Denuvo, it's unlikely to impact game sales or reviews.

Electronic Arts has recently removed Denuvo from Immortals of Aveum. Denuvo is often seen as a controversial and invasive software, so this will likely be seen as good news for gamers who want to play Immortals of Aveum on PC.

Immortals of Aveum was released back in August 2023, and it failed to meet critical or financial success. Most reviews of Immortals of Aveum had mixed impressions of the game, often praising the title’s spellcasting mechanics and graphics, but the story and combat failed to impress critics. Due to these issues, Immortals of Aveum currently stands with an average critic score of only 72 on OpenCritic.

With his seemingly bottomless reserve of optimism and unquestionable loyalty to his friends, Immortals of Aveum’s Devyn has Golden Retriever energy.

Now, as spotted by Dark Side of Gaming, EA has recently removed the Denuvo anti-tamper tech from Immortals of Aveum. The change occurs around 18 months after the original release of Immortals of Aveum, and is not very surprising, considering that standard Denuvo contracts often only last for a while to prevent piracy in the first months after a game is released. While Denuvo is overwhelmingly disliked by PC gamers due to its invasive nature and players often accuse it of affecting the performance of games, it’s unclear whether this removal will impact the performance of Immortals of Aveum in any way.

Despite being considered good news, it’s unlikely that this recent change will affect the sales of Immortals of Aveum or the overall opinion about the game, though. Immortals of Aveum already had massive discounts four months after release likely due to poor sales.

These issues led to the game’s developer Ascendant Studios laying off around half of its staff soon after Immortals of Aveum was released. Immortals of Aveum continued to receive new updates subsequently, though, with bugs being fixed and new features such as HDR support also being added.

While part of Immortals of Aveum’s financial failure was likely attributed to the beginning of the current crisis the gaming industry is facing, the game was heavily criticized even by some Ascendant Studio developers. In one interview, a former developer of the studio revealed that Immortals of Aveum was massively overscoped. The game allegedly had a budget of $125 million, $40 million of which was used in marketing, and it was the studio’s debut. The developer also bashed the game for being a single-player FPS game in the current market, which was described as essentially a bad idea, as multiplayer is what keeps most games in the genre alive.
