Food might not be as essential to survival in Hytale as in other games of this kind, it's still fairly important for players who want to maintain good health and stamina buffs. Not only does food restore health, but a hearty meal will increase both your maximum health and stamina values while also giving you a nice regeneration bonus on top. These buffs get stronger depending on the type of food you make, and in order to make the best meals possible, you'll need ingredients like milk and cheese. These aren't that hard to get, but with the way Hytale's early access version works, it can be a little tricky.

Ice is one of the many resources players will need to craft special items and structures in Hytale. Here's where you can get it.

Where to Get Milk in Hytale

Milk can be gathered from cows, but they won't just drop them for you. You need to get Milk yourself by getting a Wooden Bucket and right-clicking on the cows. However, as of writing, Hytale doesn't have a fully-implemented animal farming/husbandry system yet, which does lead to a few problems:

  1. Players can't tame cows (yet)
  2. Cows will always try to run away from players
  3. Cows have a tendency to randomly disappear even when corralled
  4. A bucket of Milk is only good for one block of Cheese
  5. Cows can only be milked once per day

Players should expect these to become non-issues once the proper systems are patched into the game.

You'll randomly find groups of cows somewhere in Zone 1's forest biomes. They are somewhat rare, though, so you'll want to make the most out of every encounter. Since cows usually travel in groups, try bringing multiple buckets whenever you go out looking for them.

With some effort, you can chase cows into pens. Leading them into large boxes made of solid blocks keeps them from escaping.

How to Make Cheese in Hytale

You can make your own Cheese by going to a Chef's Stove. This crafting station doesn't need to be upgraded, so you should be able to make Cheese as soon as you get some Milk. It's worth noting that the recipe says you can use any type of Milk, so it's likely that you'll be able to get Milk from other animals.

You can milk Mosshorns, but Mosshorn Milk cannot be used to make cheese (drink it and see what happens).

As mentioned earlier, each unit of Cheese costs one bucket of Milk to make. Meanwhile, food recipes like Caesar Salad also cost 1 Cheese to cook. Caesar Salad is one of the better food/healing items in Hytale, but unless players can consistently get Milk and make Cheese, other food options will be better simply because of ingredient availability.

Fruit and vegetable-based pies are very easy to make once you have the right setup in your base. Make sure to lay down some fish traps near water to get Salt Blocks, which you'll need for some recipes.
