Although it was just recently released into a bare-bones Early Access state, Hytale is already shaping up to be a real competitor for Minecraft. One area where Hytale already excels is in its mobs, with dozens of unique critters for players to encounter. However, the more I explore and interact with some of the game's passive and neutral mobs, the harder I find it to hunt them for food.
I've been playing Minecraft off and on, essentially, since the game was still in beta back in 2010, and have watched it evolve and drastically change over the course of that time. Part of the fun of Minecraft for me is trying to automate different aspects of gameplay, creating various farms for wool, meat, and crops to sustain my player. While this is a natural part of a sandbox game like this for me, I don't think I'll ever create a mob slaughterhouse in Hytale, nor am I likely to hunt passive mobs for food, and the reason why largely has to do with Hytale's greatest advantage over Minecraft.
Hytale's First Major Update is Out Now and It's Added Dinosaurs to the Game
Hytale officially gets its first major update, adding multiple dinosaurs alongside a suite of other changes.
Hytale Has Me Hesitant to Kill Animal Mobs
Comparing Minecraft and Hytale head-to-head is somewhat difficult at this stage in Hytale's development. Despite the game's decade-long development struggles and recent revival after initially being canceled by Riot, Hytale is missing a lot of its endgame content. Even without this content, it's clear that a lot of love and attention to detail have gone into Hytale's development so far, and this has resulted in a diverse set of mobs right out of the gate.

With 61 mobs already present in Hytale, the game has already passed Minecraft's current total number of passive and neutral mobs. Although Minecraft has more mobs if we include the game's hostile mobs, Hytale also has numerous hostile monster mobs that are non-animal creatures.
Some of my favorite animal mobs in Hytale include the Jackalope, which was one of the first mobs I found the first time I spawned into the world of Orbis. I also like the design for Hytale's Cattle and Calf mobs, which spawn all over the plains where I have built my settlement. What really impresses me about these animal mobs, beyond their diversity, is how detailed they look in both their design and animations.
Hytale also features several different races of NPCs, including Elves, Faun, and Kweebecs.

There is a lot of crossover between the mobs in Hytale and those in Minecraft, with the former being clearly inspired by the latter. While Minecraft has some unique mobs in its different Golems, Piglins, and Endermen, Hytale also features some interesting takes on other Minecraft mobs, like the Jackelope instead of the basic Rabbit, or the Ram as a variant of the Sheep. Hytale also has entirely unique animal mobs like the Saber-Toothed Tiger and Snakes that Minecraft doesn't feature at all.
Hytale Already Has a Feature Minecraft Has Fumbled for 17 Years (For Players Like Me)
After years of Minecraft developer Mojang pushing back on my most requested feature, Hytale’s early access version has ticked the long-empty box.
Hytale's Mobs Are Far More Detailed than Minecraft's
Along with Hytale featuring variations on Minecraft's classic mobs, the game also makes these mobs far more detailed than Minecraft. Although Minecraft's blocky art style is a signature part of its identity, the game's mobs suffer some level of detail as a result. Comparatively, Hytale's mobs are far more detailed in their designs, while still retaining a similar blocky style. As such, Hytale's mobs look more expressive, with higher resolution faces compared to the minimalist textures of Minecraft's mobs.
It's this level of detail that has led me to hesitate when hunting for food in Hytale. I have a hard time killing these animal mobs due to their more expressive personality; watching an animal mob fall to the ground and close its eyes when killed is heartbreaking, and I hate having to watch it each time I need to hunt in Hytale. In Minecraft, mobs quickly fall over and disappear when killed, while Hytale mobs leave a corpse that sticks around for a while to remind me of the atrocity I've just committed. To make matters worse, some mobs like Cattle and Pigs have babies that spawn alongside them, making it even tougher for me to bring myself to use them as a food source.
It's Hard Watching Hytale's Animal Mobs Die, So I Have Resorted to the Alternative
Since I essentially have become a vegan in Hytale, I needed to find a way to get food without having to kill animal mobs. The best alternative I've found is to create a large plot of land and grow crops like lettuce and eggplant, which can both be cooked into dishes at the Chef's Stove workbench. Wild Berry Salad is what I tend to make since lettuce grows quickly and wild berries are plentiful, so I've been able to stock up on these salads to heal my character and avoid having to slaughter the adorable animal mobs of Hytale just to satiate my hunger.
