Hytale is taking another step in the right direction, as the developer has revealed that it has already secured funding for the future of the game. The Hytale update is the latest in good news coming from the game following what had previously looked like tragedy unfurling.

For the unfamiliar, Hytale is a Minecraft-like game that spawned out of the Minecraft server Hypixel. Initially beginning development back in 2015, fans of both the server and Minecraft were excited and intrigued by what Hytale would bring to the formula. Though the game went through a bumpy path to get to this point, the future of Hytale is looking promising.

Hytale Takes One Step to Fulfilling a Promise

Now, the founder of Hypixel, Simon Collins-Laflamme, has good news for expectant gamers, revealing that development costs for the first two years of the game's support has already been secured. Simon also reinforced his prior promise that the game would be supported for a whopping ten years, which came as great news to players of Minecraft, since that title has been supported and grown considerably since its initial 2009 release. Likely the most impressive detail is that these first two years were funded entirely by pre-orders of Hytale, showing the level of support that the community has for the game.

In addition to announcing the development funding, Simon also revealed that there are now roughly 50 members on the development team for the game. While it remains to be seen how the game will be received, players are on the brink of getting their hands on it, as Hytale will officially launch on January 13, 2026.

Hytale is a Rare Comeback Tale

Hytale is a bright glimmer in an unfortunate era of frequent game cancellations and the shuttering of development studios. In 2025 alone, major games like Perfect Dark, Black Panther, and Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link were all scrapped. Studios were far from exempt, with development groups like Monolith Productions being shut down entirely, and jobs being cut all over the industry throughout the year. Hytale looked like it would be just one more casualty of 2025 when ten years into its development, it was announced that the game was being canceled, and that the studio would be shut down by Riot Games.

As one might expect, expectant fans were extremely saddened to hear about the cancellation, with many flocking to sign petitions to ask Riot Games to change its mind. Even the developer of indie darling Stardew Valley spoke up on the matter, explaining that while he was busy working on his own games, he was also open to the idea of helping to save the game, if the developer wanted to reach out. However, that ended up not being necessary.

Not every plea to save a canceled game goes well, making Hytale a rarity, as the game was successfully rescued from being completely canceled. Just shy of two months after it was announced that the game was being scrapped, Simon revealed that he was working on regaining the rights to Hytale, and by November, he confirmed that he had the IP rights for the game again. As a result, the game will officially release in early access on January 13.

It seems that fans of the game have been extremely excited to learn of its return, judging by the amount of financing the team was able to secure through pre-orders thus far. Although Hytale had been in development longer than initially planned, a lot of players objected to all of the work that had been poured into it simply going to waste and never reaching players. The developers are likely very pleased that the community has come through for them and proved their support by actually buying the game.
