How to Get a Horse in Hytale

The procedurally-generated worlds of Hytale are huge, and traversing all of it on foot isn't exactly the most ideal thing to do. Luckily, players can get a variety of mounts in the game, with the most basic (and obvious) ones being horses.

If you'd rather not walk all over Orbis, then riding a horse is a decent alternative. They're fast and have more stamina than players, and they can easily take you from one point to another quickly. Here's what you need to do to get and ride a horse in Hytale.

As of writing, Hytale is still in its early access launch version. Many of the game's intended features are still missing, and while horseback riding is possible, completely taming a horse isn't. Such a feature is likely to arrive in a future updates as the game continues to evolve.

Where to Find Horses in Hytale

Horses are usually found somewhere in meadow biomes, which are regions mostly covered by quiet hills and grasslands. You'll often find horses minding their own business while you're exploring these biomes for materials, but if you want to ride one, you'll have to be careful. Horses will flee the moment they see you, so try to sneak behind them.

When you're near a horse, you can press the F key by default to mount one. You don't need any saddles, nor do you need to feed the horse anything if you want to ride it. Just approach them, press F, then off you go. Unfortunately, this won't necessarily make the horse friendly to you, and once you dismount, it will likely run away in fear.

Taming Horses in Hytale

If you don't want to scare horses away, bring a carrot with you. As long as you have a carrot in your hand, any mature horse in your general vicinity will come to you out of their own volition. However, the moment you hold any other item in Hytale, any nearby horse will run away.

You can find carrots randomly in the wilderness. Alternatively, you can plant some carrots of your own. Carrot seeds can be crafted at a Farmer's Workbench using 3 Essences of Life.

As of writing, holding a carrot near a horse is the only way to keep them from running away. However, doing this will not make any horse permanently friendly toward you. The moment you put the carrot away, they will run off. It doesn't matter if you've already mounted them, but if you corrale them in your base, they won't try to run away even if you've put your carrot down.
