There are eight types of weapons in Hytale: six physical weapons and two magic weapons. The usefulness of these weapons depends on two factors: the material a weapon is made out of and its moveset. Trying to rank weapons based on the rarity of the ore they are crafted with is not very useful. Mithril weapons will always be stronger than Adamantite ones, and Cobalt weapons will always be stronger than Copper ones. The rarer the ore, the stronger the weapon. This is an understood part of Hytale’s progression loop and not really worth discussing.

Instead of categorizing each individual weapon in an expansive tier list, this guide focuses on ranking weapon types based on their movesets and unique characteristics, how useful they are against enemies and other players, and what makes them stand out among the rest. Here are the details.

Daggers

  • Basic Attack: Fast, nimble attacks that can be performed without stopping.
  • Charge Attack: Launches the player forward a short distance, bouncing off the enemy if it hits.
  • Alternate Attack: Block
  • Signature Ability: Perform an empowered 3-move attack combo that deals serious damage.

Daggers have a lightning-fast moveset, built around hyper-aggression. Each individual hit from a Dagger deals very little damage, but you can chain together so many of them in succession that it balances out. However, that alone is not enough to make this weapon considerably better than other options in the game. What makes Daggers one of the best melee weapons in Hytale is the charge attack. If this attack lands on an enemy, you rebound backwards, putting you out of range of enemy follow-ups.

In the hands of a skilled player, this movement tech can be used to bounce off of enemies, weaving in and out of combat, dealing incredible damage while not taking a single hit. Even better, this charge attack’s forward momentum can even be used outside of combat as well as a traversal mechanic, shortening the travel time drastically if used correctly.

Sword

  • Basic Attack: 3-move attack combo consisting of two diagonal swings, followed by a downward chop.
  • Charge Attack: A short forward strike where the player plunges the sword in a straight thrust.
  • Alternate Attack: Block
  • Signature Ability: A circular slash that hits anything close to the player in an AoE, followed by an empowered forward thrust dealing massive damage.

Swords offer players a balanced approach to combat in Hytale. Their damage is decent, and their moveset is faster than most melee weapons, but the most crucial reason why Swords are considered S-Rank is that they are one-handed weapons, and can, therefore, be paired up with an off-hand weapon or tool.

During exploration, Swords allow players to equip a torch in their left hand, whereas during combat, you can equip Shields, drastically improving the defensive tools available to the player. In addition, the charge attack is an excellent distance closer that can be used to catch up to enemies that are not within melee range.

Shortbow

  • Basic Attack: Pull back the bow string and fire an arrow.
  • Charge Attack: NIL
  • Alternative Attack: Block
  • Signature Ability: Fire three arrows at the same time.

Shortbows are the most reliable long-range weapons in Hytale, allowing players to deal with enemies from afar using arrows instead of having to get up-close and personal. The damage a Shortbow deals depends on the tier of the weapon and the quality of the arrow being used. The arrows fired from a Shortbow have excellent range and are extremely accurate, making the weapon very easy to pick up and use. The signature ability offers the option to fire three arrows at the same time, dealing triple the damage in a single shot.

Hand Crossbow

  • Basic Attack: Fire six loaded arrows.
  • Charge Attack: NIL
  • Alternative Attack: Block
  • Signature Ability: Charges up a single arrow to deal massive damage.

Hand Crossbows allow players to load up and fire six arrows in quick succession, one after the other. The faster shooting means you can unload all six arrows nearly instantly into an enemy at close or medium range. Arrows fired from a Hand Crossbow are fired with less force compared to those fired by a Shortbow, meaning each arrow deals less damage, travels slower, and drops faster. As a result, Hand Crossbows have a shorter range compared to Shortbows, even though both are considered range weapons.

That said, the benefit of being able to fire a full magazine, so to speak, is very useful, as it allows the Hand Crossbow to be used as a short or medium-range tank-killer. Additionally, Hand Crossbows are one-handed weapons, which means you can equip an off-hand item like a Shield or torch with them, something the Shortbow doesn’t allow.

B-Tier

Battleaxe

  • Basic Attack: Two diagonal chops, followed by a downward strike.
  • Charge Attack: A short forward jump followed by a powerful downward strike that deals massive damage.
  • Alternative Attack: Block
  • Signature Ability: Horizontal 360-degree spinning strikes, where the player swings the battleaxe in a circle around themselves like a spinning top. Each swing deals moderate damage.

The Battleaxe is a two-handed weapon that deals excellent damage per-hit with the downside of being relatively slow to handle. The highlight of this weapon is its charge attack and its signature attack. When used properly, the charge attack can be used to OHKO troublesome enemies without giving them a chance to retaliate. However, it can be tricky to land this attack as it can easily miss if you don’t predict where the enemy is going to be a second in advance. As for the signature ability, if you’re able to hug an enemy for the entire duration of the whirlwind animation, this turns into the highest damage-dealing move in the entire game. Despite its strengths, the overall slow nature of the weapon prevents it from being ranked higher.

C-Tier

Mace

  • Basic Attack: Three slow, lumbering diagonal swings that damage all enemies in a cone in front of the player.
  • Charge Attack: A slower, powered-up version of the basic attack that deals even more damage.
  • Alternate Attack: Block
  • Signature Ability: A jump followed by a downward slam that deals AoE damage around the point of impact.

The Mace is a two-handed weapon with the highest attack damage and the slowest attack speed in Hytale. It is a reliable, if slow-moving, weapon that requires the player to be willing and able to take a few hits in order to get their own damage in. Due to its attack speed and the fact that it takes skill and patience to land attacks, the Mace is less user-friendly compared to other options. Still, with the right build, it can be devastating.

The basic attack is a slow, lumbering swing that attacks all enemies in a cone in front of the player. The charge attack is a slower, powered-up version of the basic attack that deals even more damage. The signature move is a jump followed by a downward slam that deals AoE damage around the point of impact.

Flame Crystal Staff

  • Basic Attack: A single fireball shot in a straight line.
  • Charge Attack: An empowered fireball that deals increased AoE damage and can burn enemies.
  • Alternate Attack: Transforms the staff into a fiery lance held in front of the player, dealing tick damage.
  • Signature Ability: Summons a fiery whirlwind of fire that covers a large area selected by the player, burning anyone caught within the blast.

The Flame Crystal Staff is a ranged weapon that allows players to throw fireballs by consuming Essence of Fire. As a magic weapon, every attack from the Flame Crystal Staff costs one Essence of Fire, making it extremely costly to use and maintain. Damage-wise, the Flame Crystal Staff is quite decent. Its basic attack deals okay fire damage that can be quite useful in a pinch. The best part is that, unlike Shortbows and Hand Crossbows, fireballs do not have any falloff. Where you aim an attack is exactly where it will go. This makes this weapon a bit easier to use compared to other ranged options.

However, the drawback of the Flame Crystal Staff is debilitating: the need to have Essence of Fire in your inventory. Essence of Fire is a mob-only drop, meaning the only way to reliably use the Flame Crystal Staff is to first hunt monsters that drop Essence of Fire to get the material. Since the regular, non-magic weapons deal comparable, and in some cases, more damage than the Flame Crystal Staff, this cost is simply not worth it in most scenarios. That said, when venturing into dangerous territory like the Devastated Lands, the trade-off becomes worth it.

D-Tier

Ice Crystal Staff

  • Basic Attack: Swings the staff like a stick to hit enemies within melee range.
  • Charge Attack: Summons a gale of cold air that travels a straight line, dealing single-target damage.
  • Alternate Attack: Summons small icicles that shoot out of the staff in a straight line, dealing very low damage.
  • Signature Ability: NIL

The Ice Crytsal Staff is a bit strange. Like the Flame Staff, it is a magic weapon that deals ranged damage. However, it falls behind other weapons in Hytale in almost all categories. The Ice Crystal Staff suffers from very low attack damage. Regardless of how unusable its moveset is, simply the fact that the weapon’s DPS is incredibly low puts it vastly below all other weapons.

The basic attack is nearly useless, the charge attack deals okay damage, but it is single-target and takes time to charge up, and the alternate attack, which is somewhat useful because of the attack speed, consumes an Essence of Ice per hit in exchange for very low damage. Even if you have a lot of Essence of Ice to spare, the alternate attack uses stamina per hit, meaning its only benefit, the attack speed, works against it. You will run out of stamina after 5-7 consecutive hits.
