Summary
- Specialists in Hunter x Hunter are superhumans with abilities so unique they can't be categorized easily.
- Nen users can manipulate their aura into one of 6 categories, with Specialization being the most mysterious.
- Iconic Specialist Nen users like Kurapika and Chrollo wield powerful abilities with significant drawbacks.
Many in the anime community consider the power system of Hunter x Hunter to be one of the best in all of anime. This is because, through the complex and intricate combat dynamics that Togashi has created, the result is a basis for abilities that can range from simple attack boosters to powerful and complicated skills that make their users essentially one-man armies.
The power system is predicated on a person's aura and Nen, the latter of which is manifested in one of six categories. One of these categories is the Specialization type, which consists of characters whose abilities don't fall under any of the other types and are incredibly unique in their application. So, let's take a look at this class and see why some of the characters belonging to it are some of the strongest in Hunter x Hunter.

In the world of Hunter x Hunter, every living being emits a life force known as aura. Though everyone has it, very few people can actually control it due to the fact that regular beings tend to leak it out, leading to them being branded as non-users. However, some individuals are able to use a technique called Nen to personify and manipulate their auras, essentially making them superhumans.
Human potential for evolution is limitless.
The manipulation of aura takes the form of any one of the 6 Nen categories; Enhancement, Transmutation, Conjuration, Emission, Manipulation, and Specialization. When characters learn to use Nen properly, their natural affinities guide them to choose which kind of Nen category would be perfect for them and their abilities, which then take form in that way too.
Specialization Nen Type
The vaguest Nen type
One of the first stages of becoming an official hunter is the Water Divination process, which shows each individual the affinity they have to a Nen type. This is done with a glass of water placed in front of them, and if they exhibit any effect on the glass of water that doesn't fit into the other 5 types, they are assigned to the Specialist Nen users. Due to how broad these effects can be in terms of practical use, the Specialization type is the most vague of all Nen categories, often having more steps and conditions compared to the abilities of the other types.
Specialist Nen abilities also tend to be the broadest in terms of application, as they can range from techniques that have great combat utility to even those that can see the future. This is also a reason why Specialists are not at as much of a disadvantage as other Nen users if their category is ever revealed. This mysterious nature of this type is enhanced when taken with the fact that this type of Nen doesn't follow the same rules and regulations as the other classes.
I do not fear death. I fear only that my rage will fade over time.
Another unique trait of this Nen type is that it can either be used or it can't. Users of other Nen types are unable to utilize this class or even learn it partially, so only Specialists themselves can make full use of their abilities. Despite having the option to learn this skill later in life, it's still more likely for Manipulation or Conjuration types to do so, which is why Specialization lies at the bottom of the Nen chart simply because it's most unlike the others.
Though the actual development of their ability tends to remain a mystery, some indication as to how it works can be seen during the Water Divination process. Though it is still vague, an argument can be made about the Specialist's ability to have a relation to the user's personality, though only 3 results of this have been shown throughout the series, which still makes the Nen category an elusive one to understand.
Hunter x Hunter: The Strongest Chimera Ants, Ranked
The Chimera Ants have proven to be some of Hunter x Hunter's most fearsome foes. Here are their strongest fighters, ranked.
Notable Specialization Nen Users
Here are some of the most iconic Specialist Nen users
Kurapika
Though Kurapika is technically a Conjurer, once his eyes turn scarlet, he becomes a Specialist Nen user. His Specialist ability, called Emperor Time, allows him to use all the types of Nen associated with the Conjuration type with 100% efficiency. His powers are divided into levels, force, and accuracy, and when he uses Emperor Time, his level in all of his Nen abilities remains the same, but his force and accuracy are greatly increased. Though powerful, it comes with the huge caveat that every second of using this ability shortens his lifespan by 1 hour.
Chrollo Lucilfer
Chrollo is one of the series' most powerful characters and is a master at using his Specialist ability, Skill Hunter. This incredible power allows Chrollo to copy and steal the ability of his opponent and keep it saved within a book that he carries at all times. Due to this, he can switch between the abilities of many people within the book on a whim, making him one of the most broken characters in the series. Once he steals the ability of a user, they're unable to use the it anymore, with the sole ownership of it going to Chrollo.
Neferpitou
Neferpitou is a Chimera Ant and an extremely dangerous character whose ability belongs to the Specialist type. This power is called Dr. Blythe and it essentially summons a doctor-creature connected to Neferpitou's tail. Dr. Blythe has the power to heal pretty much any injuries or ailments inflicted on Neferpitou in the span of an hour, making it an incredibly powerful ability. It can also be used to treat others.
Hunter x Hunter can be streamed on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
