As with any colony sim or city builder game, it's important to know how to make food in Norland, in order to keep the population healthy and happy. There are three types of food, and both peasants and lords will eat them in the following order if all of them are available: Meat, Flour, and Rutabaga. Predictably, the more sought-after foods of Flour and Meat are harder to produce, and in fact, require multiple steps, the first of which is purchasing books.

When food has been produced, lords will take it for free from the warehouse whenever they feel hungry, but peasants must purchase it from the market or Holy Caravans. Players themselves set the price of each food type and alcohol for the market and, as they also decide the wages of workers and warriors, they have ultimate control over the economy. Surplus food can also be sold to the Holy Caravan or other rulers via trade.

Norland: Beginner Tips For The Colony Sim

Norland beginners should heed the following tips for an easier experience when first starting the game.

How To Grow Rutabaga In Norland

Norland Rutabaga Field

Rutabaga is by far the easiest food to produce in Norland, but those who have no option but to eat it daily will lament the lack of better-tasting food, especially if they are of noble stock. In other words, characters will have a visible reduction in their overall mood. Rutabaga is also used to produce Moonshine, a type of alcohol in Norland, and it is also required as feed for pigs to produce Meat. Therefore, players will need to know how to make plenty of it, even beyond the early game.

Thankfully, only the two following steps are required:

  • Build a Rutabaga Field on a patch of land with high fertility, and make sure a lord is set to manage the Hall so that builders will be directed to start construction.
  • Assign a lord to manage the completed field and wait for the harvest to come in every day.

There are also two books that can help with the production of Rutabaga available to those of the Varn culture, but players will likely want to focus on acquiring more pressing knowledge first.

How To Make Flour In Norland

Norland Making Flour at the Mill

Making Flour in Norland is not so simple at first, as it is a multi-step process that cannot even be started at the start of the game. To make Flour, players must first produce Rye, which is then ground at a mill, and the following steps explain how this is all done:

  • Build a library where books can be studied to gain knowledge and technological advancements.
  • Purchase and study the Rye Field and Mill book from the Holy Caravan.
  • Build a Rye Field on fertile land, even if it means destroying an extra Rutabaga Field to make space.
  • Assign a lord to manage the Rye Field to begin farming.
  • Build a Mill and assign a lord to manage it.
  • Go to the Production tab at the bottom and put in an order for Flour.

It's best to assign lords with high Intelligence to study important books, as otherwise, it will take a long time to obtain key technology. A lord with fewer tasks will also complete their studies faster.

There are some ways to go around this. For example, if players don't have fertile land, they could trade with a neighboring realm to purchase the Rye and then turn it into Flour at a Mill. Within the player's settlement, Peasants will buy Flour at the market, whereas lords will take their due for free from the warehouse, and then presumably, the Flour is baked into bread behind the scenes. Or perhaps the people of Norland are just different and eat their Flour raw.

To increase production and make more Flour in Norland, players can upgrade their Mill, although after two upgrades an additional book must be studied. Alternatively, more Mills can be made and, as with any building or field, it helps to have lords with high Management skills assigned.

How To Produce Meat In Norland

Norland Pig Farm to make Meat

Producing Meat in Norland is fairly easy in terms of know-how and steps, but it will be a while before it becomes available and will always be the rarest but best food in the game. The reason it takes a while is that knowledge of pig farming must first be obtained through the studying of a book in the library. The wait will be worth it, however, as the consumption of Meat in Norland gives characters a boost to their overall mood. Similarly to a game such as Crusader Kings 3, moods and opinions are everything in Norland.

These are the steps to be followed:

  • Amass a population of at least 30.
  • Purchase and study the Pig Farm book from the Holy Caravan.
  • Build a Pig Farm once the knowledge has been fully acquired from the book.
  • Assign a lord to manage the Pig Farm who will subsequently instruct workers.
  • Wait 6 days for the pigs to be slaughtered for Meat.
  • 50 Rutabaga will be required to feed the pigs at the start of a new breeding cycle.

The knowledge required to build things such as Pig Farms and Mills will be lost upon the death of characters who read the relevant books, so make sure they pass on their knowledge to the next generation. Otherwise, these buildings will crumble, and new ones won't be able to be constructed.

Once the Pig Farm is up and running, that's all players need to do apart from wait 6 days and always have enough spare Rutabaga for feed. To increase the output of Meat, they can upgrade the farm or build another. Another option to obtain temporary Meat is to send lords out to hunt Fleshwolves together, where the primary purpose is social. These outings are far from enough to satiate the entire population, but some extra Meat will keep the lords happy, which means a more efficient settlement.
