In Shadow of the Erdtree, as players approach the Shadow Keep through Scadu Altus, a message pops up around the midway point stating, 'Somewhere a great rune has broken,' and in true Elden Ring fashion, players are given no indication about who the great rune belongs to and how it has been broken.

The great rune in question is Miquella's Great Rune, a miscellaneous item that is unlike any other great rune players will have encountered before. Additionally, not only is Miquella's Rune easy to miss, but the game also doesn't tell players how to use it. This guide covers both topics in detail.

How to Use Miquella's Great Rune

The only use for Miquella's Great Rune is to remove the insta-kill debuff applied by Miquella during Radahn, Consort of Miquella boss fight. After Radahn loses 1/3rd of his HP, Miquella appears draped over his back, allowing Radahn to perform a grab attack that puts a mark on the Tarnished. This mark appears as a golden crown floating above the player's head. The way this attack works is that if Radahn performs the same grab attack a second time while the golden crown mark is active, the player dies instantly with a unique death message: "Heart Stolen."

If Miquella's Great Rune is used when the Heart Stolen debuff is on the player, the golden crown will disappear, and the mark will be reset. This means that Radahn cannot instantly kill you if you manage to use Miquella's Great Rune before he catches you again.

Miquella's Great Rune can be equipped like any other tool in a Quick Items or Pouch Slot.

Miquella's Great Rune Location

Miquella's Great Rune is a reward for defeating the Scadutree Avatar below the Shadow Keep. Here is how to get to this location.

Start from the Highroad Cross Site of Grace and head east to find the Moorth Ruins. Inside the Ruins will be a small hole in the ground leading to an underground tunnel that serves as the gateway to Bonny Village. Take the bridge east from Bonny Village and stay on the road as it heads north to the Church District Highroad Site of Grace. Choose the western road on the fork ahead to reach the Church District.

You'll find the entire area flooded with water with only thin stone rooftops visible to the naked eye. Use these as walkways to get to the Church rooftop on the left (route detailed in screenshots above) and drop down on top of the archway.

Jump down to the stone passage and follow the route ahead. There will be multiple passageways to the left, guarded by Fire Knights. The second exit leads to a lever that will drain the water, unlocking the next section.

Jump down to the Sunken Chapel Site of Grace and turn to the building directly to its north. There will be an Ulcerated Tree Spirit in the courtyard in front of the entrance. Ignore it and head inside to find a Fire Knight Summoner and some exploding zombies in a wide chapel.

Directly to the right of where the Fire Knight stands is a room with a large green door underneath a balcony. Open the door and take the elevator inside to head down to the Tree-Worship Passage Site of Grace. Follow the narrow tunnel ahead to reach the Tree-Worship Sanctum behind the Statue of Marika. The Scadutree Avatar boss fight is right in front of you. Defeat the Scadutree Avatar to obtain the Remembrance of the Shadow Sunflower and Miquella's Great Rune.
