Similar to ores, you can find obsidian in a cave. It is usually found next to lava, which makes the process of mining dangerous. So, the first step is to find the right cave. In this case, you need to find a desert because obsidian does not spawn in caves of other biomes. Open the map, and look at what surrounds you; the desert is marked yellow on the map, and the available caves are marked with an icon that looks like two mountains with doors.

Then, just move to the cave entrance and go deeper. Keep moving until you see a lava, it will be your main landmark. Beware of enemies because there are plenty of them there, and they all just wait to attack and kill you. When approaching the lava, also remember to use something that will protect you from high temperatures, such as Snow Berries.
