World of Warcraft's upcoming expansion, The War Within, will be released this year. With all the new content and features coming with the expansion, it's looking to be a good time to play WoW. Even better is the chance to play it early during the beta tests.

The War Within's beta opt-in is now live. It will give players a chance to play the game during the testing phase and get a look at what's in store with the expansion. This guide details how to sign up for the beta and what you can expect.

How to Sign up for The War Within Beta

Signing up for The War Within beta is simple, and all players need is their Battle.net account. To sign up, here's what players need to do.

  • Head to the World of Warcraft: The War Within website.
  • At the top, there should be both an option to preorder and beta opt-in.
  • Click the beta opt-in option and select request beta access. Players who are already signed in to your Battle.net on the website will automatically be opted in.
  • Once that's done, it's a case of waiting to be selected for the beta.

It is worth noting that players may not get invited to the beta right away. However, several waves of invitations will be sent out during the beta period, so just be patient. Eventually, an invitation should be sent out. Alternatively, players who preorder the epic edition of The War Within will get guaranteed beta access, along with several other goodies like 3-day early access. If players are okay with dropping close to $100, this is the surefire way to try and play the game early.

If selected, players need to install a different version of World of Warcraft, which is done with the following steps:

  • Select World of Warcraft in the games list in the Battle.net launcher.
  • In the drop-down menu above the Play button, there will be an option to download The War Within, listed in the in-development section.
  • Select it, and install this version of the game.

Once installed, players can create a test character or a copy of their existing character to use during the test.

What to Expect from The War Within Beta

The beta for The War Within will allow players to try all the new content coming in World of Warcraft's next expansion, which will also be the start of the Worldsoul Saga, which will be the main story focus for the next few expansions.

This includes the new zones found under Azeroth, filled with new characters and factions to meet, along with the Nerubian empire and all the new enemies that want to destroy Azeroth. These new zones will also have new content, such as Delves to explore. These new mini-dungeon-like instances will allow one to five players to take on puzzles, bosses, and other challenges for rewards in this new endgame pillar.

New Hero Talents will also add more power and fantasy to classes, with extra abilities and passive effects unlocked as players journey through the expansions' new zones. To top it off, there is a new allied faction for both Alliance and Horde in the Earthen, a dwarf-like race made of stone, as well as a new alt-friendly system called Warbands, which will see reputations, resources, collections, and much more shared across multiple characters, regardless of faction.

Add to that the new Dynamic Flying and the dungeons and raids that will be coming, and it makes for a massive amount to try during the beta and to look forward to in the future when The War Within is released later this year.
