Your ship's shields are your first line of defense in Jump Space, and when they go down, your hull will be exposed to everything the Legion can throw at you. Unlike in other games, ship shields here don't regenerate automatically, which means you'll have to do some some of that work yourself if you want to stay protected.

While it's a little confusing at first, restoring ship shields in Jump Space is actually pretty simple. If you've played other crew-based games before, this process should feel a bit familiar to you, but even if you haven't, you can easily restore your ship's shields once you know what to do.

How to Restore Shields in Jump Space

Jump Space Ship Shield Unit fabrication

To restore your ship's shield strength, you'll first need to either fabricate or scavenge some Ship Shield Units. These can be made at your ship's Assembler 30 Materia, and each fabrication will give you four units to use. The process doesn't end here, though.

Jump Space Reactive Armor repair

Once you get some Ship Shield Units, you'll have to go to the exterior of your ship and use the shield kits on the Reactive Armor plates on the hull. Disabled plates will show up on your HUD, so just follow the icons you see on your screen so you can patch your vessel up.

As of writing, each Ship Shield Unit will restore an entire Shield point when used, but it seems like players won't be able to repair a Reactive Armor plate if its shields are only partially depleted. The prompt to repair an armor piece won't appear if it hasn't been fully destroyed yet, so you may want to factor this in when preparing your ship for combat.

Partially damaged shield segments will not regenerate automatically, and there doesn't appear to be a way to manually drain a Reactive Armor piece's shields for pre-emptive repairs.

Ship Repair Tips and Best Practices

  • If you're playing solo, craft a couple of shield unit batches and just leave them behind the pilot's seat. If you want to keep the cabin clean and mess-free, there are shelves near the airlocks that you can use to store items.
  • If you're on repair duty during a co-op session, bring a heavy weapon with you so you can help shoot down enemy ships.
  • When you find single Ship Shield Units while scavenging, leave them in front of a Reactive Armor piece instead of sending them to the ship's storage bay.
  • Keep an eye out for Artifacts that can help your ship take more hits. The ones that reflect damage to enemies are especially good if your ship often takes damage.
