Star Wars Outlaws fulfills the fantasy of many players who want to be a rapscallion in a dangerous and treacherous world. While the game successfully creates an immersive experience, a few elements can break that immersion.

One such issue is the use of yellow paint to indicate the path ahead or mark climbable surfaces. While some players may not find this feature bothersome — in fact, some might even appreciate its presence — others may dislike its inclusion. If you belong to the latter group, you've come to the right place. The guide below details how to remove it.

How To Remove Yellow Pain in Star Wars Outlaws

You don't need to jump through any hoops or install a mod to remove the yellow paint. Thankfully, Massive Entertainment, the developer of Star Wars Outlaws, has included an option in the game to disable this feature. However, finding it among the sea of options and menus can be a bit tricky.

Here's what you need to do:

  • Once you're in the game, open the Settings menu.
  • Click on the Gameplay menu (the second option in the Settings menu).
  • Scroll down a bit until you find Explorer Mode under the VISUAL section.
  • Turn it on.

That’s it! The immersion-breaking yellow paint will now be removed from the game. However, keep in mind that this may make traversal and pathfinding more challenging. But if you're aiming for a more immersive experience, it's worth it.

Note that Explorer Mode cannot be enabled if High Contrast Mode is active. If you prefer high contrast visuals, you’ll need to choose between the two options.

What is Yellow Paint Controversy

Cloud climbing yellow paint in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

There has been a growing dissent in the gaming community about the use of yellow paint to convey information, such as indicating the next path, marking climbable surfaces, or highlighting interactive or breakable objects. This feature is also used to make points of interest stand out more visually.

While this feature offers clear benefits and is particularly helpful for new or casual players, some find it immersion-breaking and view it as a simplistic solution to a game design issue. The recently released Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster has reignited this controversy.

Possible Solution to Yellow Paint Issue

Many games, such as Star Wars Outlaws, now offer players the option to disable this feature if they find it unappealing, catering to both types of players. Horizon Forbidden West provides another effective solution: yellow markings appear only when players use their Focus — an augmented reality device. These markings disappear after a few seconds, balancing immersion with gameplay aid and justifying their presence through in-game lore.
