While it's possible to play and enjoy Ghost of Yotei without having played Ghost of Tsushima, most players have likely played the first game before diving into Atsu's adventure. To provide a nod to Jin Sakai, the protagonist of the first game, developer Sucker Punch has included a quest that allows players to get their hands on Jin's Storm Blade, Demon Mask, and even a Stag Helmet. In this guide, I'll explain how to start the Jin Sakai mission in Ghost of Yotei, and how to get the Storm Blade, Ghost Mask, and Stag Helmet for yourself.
Things to Do First in Ghost of Yotei
Here's a comprehensive list of things you should do first in Ghost of Yotei to ensure you're off to the most effective start possible.
How to Start Jin Sakai Quest in Ghost of Yotei
To start this tale, you'll need to travel to the Oshima Coast region and head to the southwest section to find a Forgotten Shrine. If you need some more reference points, it's found south of Orito Forest and is relatively close to the waterside. I've included a map screenshot of its exact location above.
Once you've found the Forgotten Shrine, speak to the Storyteller, Ugetsu, kneeling by the torii gate. This will then allow you to properly start the tale, by heading up the path behind him, which will eventually lead us to the Storm Blade and Jin Sakai's ghost mask.
How to Get Jin Sakai's Storm Blade and Ghost Mask in Ghost of Yotei
Head up the path from the storyteller and cut your way through some of the growing bamboo to find an ancient fox shrine. Pay your respects here, and you'll cause a fox to appear following a brief cutscene. Follow the fox until it disappears into a hole, and you're left with crossing the waterfall using the cliff-side and grapple-able wooden structures.
In the next area, you need to carry on climbing your way up to cross the fallen tree at the top to get out of this water-filled valley.
As you make your way up, you'll find a shrine with a small flame in it and a familiar symbol beneath it. Bow here, and you'll cause red leaves to get blown across the screen by the wind. A neat reference to Ghost of Tsushima.
Follow the path along until you're reunited with the fox in an open area with a red-leaved tree and a chest underneath it. Investigate the area by interacting with the chest to find Jin's haiku. After reading this, the wind will reveal a hidden gap in the wall that you can squeeze through. Continue following your fox friend and use the holds in the sides of the cliff and the tree branches to make it to the other side of the gap. You'll now reach the 'Lost Shinobi Den.'
This is where you can find some Silk Fibers on the floor, Jin's old saddle, some steel, and Jin's Stag Helmet. This is the first of three pieces of Jin Sakai's gear we can get in Ghost of Yotei.
Once you've ransacked the place, use the rock to the right of its entrance to jump onto the roof, and then jump from the roof to the small ledge on the other side to find holds to climb up the cliff face. Abseil down the other side and climb across the cliff to find wooden planks you can jump across to reach the top of the waterfall.
Head inside and follow the wind to find a gap you can crawl through. On the other side, you'll find the Storm Blade on the opposite wall. Unfortunately, Nine Tails will appear and steal the blade from you. Defeat the two enemies that wait behind to take care of you, and then chase the other, going back the way you came towards Jin's house, to retrieve the Storm Blade.
The chase sequence requires some basic platforming, but there's no time limit here, so just keep working your way through this section until you come across a big field with white plants and a house in the middle of it. This is Jin Sakai's old house, so make your way over to it and investigate the various items inside that hint at the previous owner's identity. Make your way back outside to find fresh footprints. Follow them through the nearby gate to find the Nine Tail Sword Thief and face him in battle.
If you're struggling to beat the sword thief, you can always lower the difficulty setting. There's no trophy for beating the game on a set difficulty, so this is always a way to help get through more challenging sections.
After beating the sword thief, you'll pick up the Storm Blade and learn the 'Dance of Wrath' technique, which can be enabled by pressing L1 and R1. Once you've taken care of the remaining enemies, you'll be treated to a cutscene about Jin.
At the end of the cutscene, you can collect Jin's Ghost Mask from the foot of the monument beneath the tree.
