Runes are the key way players will get stronger throughout Elden Ring, as they are used to level up and increase the players' stats. Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree introduces Scadutree Fragments which are used to offer additional stat boosts in the Realm of Shadow, but that doesn't negate the effectiveness of runes.
Even if players don't want to use their runes to level up, Runes are the main currency of the game that will be needed to upgrade their gear, among other things. Shadow Of The Erdtree introduces Festive Grease, which can be coated on a weapon to boost the amount of runes players get when used correctly.

How To Craft Festive Grease In Shadow Of The Erdtree
Festive Grease can be crafted after players get the Battlefield Priest's Cookbook [2] in the Fort Of Reprimand. This small fort is fairly linear, with players aiming to get to the second-story ramparts to find the Fort Of Reprimand Site of Grace. From here, head southeast and through the doorway to the field boss Black Knight Edredd. After defeating Edredd, climb the stairs in the back of the room to take the ladder to the room, and open the chest to get the Cookbook.
With this cookbook, players can craft Festive Grease using:
Knot Resin can be found along the roots of trees throughout the Realm of Shadow, with Blessed Bone Shards being a bit rarer. While they can be found in few set locations throughout the Fort Of Reprimand, they can only be farmed by killing Black Knights. These items only have a chance of dropping, and players should try to boost their Item Discovery before trying to farm for them.

How To Use Festive Grease In Shadow Of The Erdtree
When applied to a weapon that doesn't already have magical damage to it, Festive Grease will give players additional runes when hitting enemies. The catch is, it will only happen on the first swing of a combo, and only need to hit the enemy, even if they are blocking. Hitting an enemy with this grease applied gives players 25 Runes. It also doesn't matter how many enemies are hit, as only 25 runes can be earned at a time.
Overall, this grease may not be worth the effort unless you change your fighting style. You'll need to do your initial combo swing before backing up or dodging to reset the combo and attack again. This is an overall inefficient way to fight, and the runes given aren't enough compared to how much players can earn by quickly killing enemies and getting the usual amount of runes.
