Summary

  • Season 3 of House of the Dragon will be massive, with a bigger scale than the previous season.
  • The production images suggest King's Landing & other key locations will be focal points in the upcoming season.
  • The new season will continue the story from the last season, with conflict brewing within the Targaryen dynasty.

House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal has teased the "insane" scale of production on season 3 of the returning fantasy series, and it seems as though fans will be pleasantly surprised at how much more they'll be getting this time around. The much-anticipated return to Westeros is at an all-time high as season 3 of House of the Dragon prepares for its bloodiest battle to date, especially with how things were left at the end of season 2's cliffhanger that saw Rhaenyra compromise a deal with Alicent to end the war, in the hopes that conflict wouldn't break out with Aemond.

Season 2 of the Game of Thrones prequel arrived in June last year and was greenlit for a third and fourth season. Based on George R.R. Martin's novel Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon focuses on the fall of the House Targaryen as the clan descends into a huge civil war where families are broken apart by greed and betrayal. Season three will follow on from the epic tale that the House of the Dragon season 2 finale left off, but now, the stakes are even higher as the Targaryen dynasty will continue to reign.

Recently, House of the Dragon creator Ryan Condal and co-host David Mandel spoke on the podcast The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of about the treasures found in Heritage Auctions' Memorabilia auction, and, of course, the subject came around to how production was going on season 3 of the fantasy series. Condal revealed that they had just wrapped up in Wales, and they are in the middle of production now as they go full steam ahead into other filming locations. He also mentioned that season 3 is so much bigger than season 2, explaining that it astounds him all the time when he walks around the set at everything the team is constructing and didn't realize how much bigger it was from the show's second installment. Here's what Condal said:

"We're right in the middle of production. We've wrapped Wales, we're moving on to some huge things now that we've got going at the studio and then other locations that we're working on, so we've moved into that part of the schedule. It gets pretty nuts here through July and August. So I will be rushing off to set tomorrow to do the beginning of some insane things that we're doing this month. But yeah, we're right in the middle in the thick of it, and it's going great. I mean, the season is just Godd**n huge. Every day I walk around there and look at the things that we're building and the things that we're doing and the number of costumes and extras and all that...I knew it was bigger than season 2, but I don't think I realized quite how much."

Fans of the show have already seen some of the scale of production on House of the Dragon season 3 in some set images at the start of the year. The images show the House of the Dragon Season 3 set under construction, in what looked to be King's Landing Red Keep and also the Weirwood Tree in the courtyard. The set photos suggest that these locations will continue to be a focus when season 3 returns. We also got a glimpse of Corlys Velaryon’s ship, ‘The Queen Who Never Was’ being built.

This new update from Condal seems to mirror the conflict yet to come from George R.R. Martin's 2018 book Fire & Blood, which begins about 100 years after the Seven Kingdoms are united by the Targaryen conquest, nearly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen. A release date for the third season of House of the Dragon hasn't yet been announced, but it's likely fans won't see new episodes until the summer of 2026.
