During the time of House of the Dragon, House Targaryen was at the peak of its powers. Many dragons existed during this time, but most of them perished during the Dance. House Targaryen was split into the Greens and the Blacks during this time, and of course, while the support of the armies of Westeros was important during the war, it was dragons that truly made the difference.
While the Greens did not have all that many, the Blacks had an abundance of these powerful fire-breathing monsters that they utilized to the fullest in the war.
10 Stormcloud

- Rider: Prince Aegon III Targaryen
Stormcloud is the dragon of Aegon the Younger, or Aegon III Targaryen. The dragon was certainly one of the very youngest that fans have known in the story. Prince Aegon Targaryen rode the dragon in the Gullet and while it managed to struggled, it did manage to get the prince to safety. Stormcloud was the only dragon that Aegon III ever rode.
9 Tyraxes
- Born: 117-120 AC
- Rider: Joffrey Velaryon
Tyraxes was the dragon mount of Prince Joffrey Velaryon. He was quite healthy, known to have been growing larger everywhere. However, during the time of the Dance, Tyraxes was not powerful enough to step into combat. Still, this dragon was capable of flying long distances perfectly fine. It is also known that this dragon was slightly smaller than Arrax, which means that its combat abilities weren't all that great.
Fans likely won't see much of Tyraxes in House of the Dragon anytime soon, but the scenes with this dragon later down the line are bound to be interesting.
8 Arrax
- Born: 115-120 AC
- Rider: Prince Lucerys Velaryon
Arrax was the dragon mount of Prince Lucerys Velaryon. Fans saw this beast in the very first season of House of the Dragon. Arrax was quite small, however, very nimble.
At the same time, it could take part in combat, to a certain extent. Arrax was eventually killed by none other than Vhagar on his way back to Dragonstone from Storm’s End. Along with Arrax, Prince Lucerys Velaryon was also killed.
7 Seasmoke
- Born: Around 101 AC
- Rider: Laenor Velaryon
Seasmoke is the dragon mount of Laenor Velaryon. Given that Laenor had the blood of Rhaenys flowing through his veins, he could bond with, as well as ride a dragon. Fans saw Seasmoke and Laenor take part in combat during the Battle in the Stepstones.
Seasmoke is quite powerful and certainly one of the strongest the Blacks have on their side. Eventually, this Dragon made its lair in the Dragonpit after Laenor's supposed death.
6 Moondancer

- Rider: Baela Targaryen
Moondancer is a she-dragon ridden by Baela Targaryen. She is quite powerful, and together with Baela, her strength is almost unmatched. Moondancer took part in many large-scale battles, and eventually, even managed to hold her own against a dragon as magnificent as Sunfyre.
In fact, Moondancer could also injure Sunfyre, which is a testament to her strength. Together with Baela, they form an incredible team and fans will certainly get to see that in House of the Dragon season 2.
5 Meleys
- Born: Around 75 AC
- Rider: Alyssa Targaryen, Rhaenys Targaryen
Meleys is certainly a powerful she-dragon and one of the fastest In Westeros. In fact, she was said to be much faster than both Caraxes and Vhagar. Fans know Meleys to be ridden by Princess Rhaenys Targaryen.
Meleys is a battle-hardened dragon and has certainly fought quite a lot. Her speed is a big asset to her, as is her ferocity. Meleys could easily hold her own against Sunfyre in combat, which is a testament to her ability as a dragon.
4 Syrax

- Rider: Rhaenyra Targaryen
Syrax is the she-dragon ridden by Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen. She has been extensively seen in House of the Dragon, and although not the biggest, Syrax is certainly one of the fiercest. Fans know her to be extremely nimble, as well as powerful.
Syrax is a force to be reckoned with for anyone. Her deep bond with Rhaenyra only strengthens her even further, and fans will most definitely get to see more of her power in the upcoming seasons of House of the Dragon.
3 Silverwing
- Born: Around 36-42 AC
- Rider: Alysanne Targaryen
Silverwing is one of the strongest dragons that fans have known during the time of the Dance. She was first ridden by Queen Alysanne Targaryen, who often flew her alongside Vermithor, who was the mount of King Jaehaerys.
Silverwing was eventually riderless after the death of Queen Alysanne and stayed in the Dragonpit for quite a long time. While currently riderless, Silverwing will most likely be seen in House of the Dragon temporarily on the side of the Blacks.
2 Vermithor
- Born: 34 AC
- Rider: Jaehaerys Targaryen
Vermithor is quite easily one of the strongest dragons that fans have known in A Song of Ice and Fire. Right now, Vermithor is easily the second largest dragon, behind only Vhagar. The Bronze Fury was ridden by King Jaehaerys Targaryen, and after his death, it remained unclaimed.
Fans have already seen him in House of the Dragon season 1. It appears that Daemon has some plans for this dragon later down the line, and if the show doesn't take its own storyline regarding Vermithor, then fans will most definitely get to see it in action once again later down the line.
1 Caraxes
- Born: Around 72 AC
- Rider: Daemon Targaryen
When it comes to all the dragons that the Blacks have, Caraxes certainly stands out on top. Although not the biggest, Caraxes is a fearless dragon capable of going one-on-one against even someone as strong as Vhagar. Caraxes is an absolute menace, and the fact that it could actually hold its own against Vhagar is proof of that.
Much of Caraxes is simply a reflection of the personality of Daemon Targaryen, who himself was fearless and wild in battle.
