It’s no secret at this point that the relationship between Fire & Blood author George R.R. Martin and House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal is “abysmal.” That’s exactly the word Martin used to describe the state of things in his recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Still, the show must go on with or without Martin’s approval — and we’ve recently learned that House of the Dragon will be officially over with the conclusion of Season 4, meaning the series may only have 16 episodes left to finish its adaptation of The Dance of the Dragons.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Set to Return in 2027, House of the Dragon to Conclude with Season 4
It’s not all doom and gloom for fans of HBO’s Game of Thrones spinoff series. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is currently airing its first season on Sunday nights. This prequel series is set in between the events of House of the Dragon and GoT. AKOTSK's budget is much, much lower than GoT or House of the Dragon, and the stakes are significantly lower as well. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows the escapades of Ser Duncan the Tall and his small squire, Egg, who is not the poor little orphan boy he pretends to be.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is already renewed for a second season, which will release in 2027. House of the Dragon Season 3 will release on HBO in summer 2026. House of the Dragon Season 4, however, will be the series finale. House of the Dragon Season 4 will release on HBO in 2028.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Who is Egg?
There's more to A Knight of the Seven Kingdom's Egg than casual Game of Thrones fans realize.
HBO Chairman and Content CEO Casey Bloys recently discussed the future of House of the Dragon with Deadline. Bloys confirmed there are no plans to extend House of the Dragon further than the downfall of the Targaryens.
“Yes, that is the idea,” Bloys said. “The idea has always been to follow the history of the Targaryens. If you know the books, you know how the Targaryens end up. So there is a natural end to this particular history of that House of the Targaryens.”
Though HBO’s House of the Dragon is meant to follow Martin’s Fire & Blood novel, Martin had many objections to Condal’s vision for Season 3. In a Zoom call with Condal, House of the Dragon producers, and HBO executives, it’s reported that Martin said, “This is not my story any longer.”
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Confirms Depressing Game of Thrones Theory
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is still 50 years out from the Tragedy at Summerhall, but Episode 3’s prophecy has confirmed a long-standing theory.
HBO Boss Addresses Game of Thrones Spinoff Speculation
As for the rumored Jon Snow-Arya Stark sequel, Bloys didn’t reveal much. He was, however, amused at how the media has been buzzing about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Bloys pointed out the difference between a show being in development versus in production.
“I will say that’s interesting. Obviously, there’s a lot of interest around the Game of Thrones universe. And one thing I noticed with the launch of The Seven Kingdoms was this idea that it was the latest Game of Thrones spinoff.
I do like to remind people that there have been exactly two spinoffs, House of the Dragon, and then The Seven Kingdoms which launched two weeks ago…
…We’ll develop a lot because we want to give ourselves the best chance of finding a show that makes sense, but we have not produced all that much. This is not Marvel level, four series a year, or anything like that. So sometimes people confuse development speculation with actual shows being produced."
For now, no real news about more Game of Thrones spinoffs. Fans will have to content themselves with the currently airing A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and look forward to House of the Dragon Season 3 this summer.
