Phasmophobia, an online multiplayer investigative horror title developed by Kinetic Games, launched in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and a surge of popularity for games that let people play with their friends during lockdown. In good company with other indie titles like Innersloth’s social deduction game Among Us and Dead By Daylight, Kinetic Games’ creation became a fan favorite and earned predominantly positive reviews from players.

Although still technically in early access, Phasmophobia is currently in a pretty polished state, and the developer releases patches and small updates on a nearly monthly basis. Kinetic Games plans to be more transparent in Phasmophobia patch notes in the future, after a poll revealed that players want every detail about what’s been changed in the game. And a 2022 roadmap shows that a lot is planned for Phasmophobia in the coming year, including upgradeable equipment, new challenges, the ability to customize characters, and a revamped VR system.

Phasmophobia launched with VR capabilities, which adds to player immersion while investigating the game’s haunted farmhouses, prison, asylum, and other spooky locales. But Kinetic will be releasing an update to Phasmophobia's VR on April 7 at 4 AM PST. The overhaul will include general optimization of the game's VR mode, a new interaction system, a Unity engine update, as well as adjusted functionality and improved visuals for the sound sensor in Phasmophobia.

A Twitter post in March shared a glimpse of the upcoming VR overhaul, although it’s likely that only gamers who have played a lot with Phasmophobia’s VR mode will spot the changes shown in the brief preview. And if the official VR tweaks aren’t enough, there are also a number of mods available for Phasmophobia to make the game even scarier. Phonophobia, for example, adds more creepy sound effects to the already creepy game, while Cam’s Reshade Preset gives Phasmophobia gloomier lighting, bloom effects, and chromatic aberration.

Kinetic Games’ Phasmophobia isn’t the only VR experience to play with friends, however, and not all of them are supernatural themed. Stormland by Insomniac Games is a highly rated sci-fi adventure in which players are androids on an alien yet beautiful world. Endnight Games’ The Forest is a survival title available on PC and PS4. After crash landing on a remote peninsula, the player must craft tools, build shelter, and fight off cannibalistic mutants while searching for their lost son. And gamers in the mood for a shooter experience can try out Population: One, a battle royale that features a variety of maps to play on and different weapons to try out.

Phasmophobia is available in Early Access on PC.
