Honkai: Star Rail fans have expressed their disappointment with the new characters' design. The reactions poured in after Honkai: Star Rail's announcement of the Version 1.6 banner characters.

Honkai: Star Rail is only a couple of weeks away before Version 1.5 officially comes out. The addition of five-star characters Huohuo and Argenti and four-star Hanya will raise the total number of playable characters to 40. Version 1.5 is also expected to expand on Honkai: Star Rail's universe with the introduction of new world Penacony.

While waiting for the launch of Version 1.5, Honkai: Star Rail already revealed the Warp banner for Version 1.6. This will include five-star characters Ruan Mei and Dr. Ratio and four-star Xueyi -- all of whom were received with much excitement. However, many fans on social media weren't happy with their designs. Netizen SipSipStefen started the discussion on Twitter, noting that Reddit users were "angry over the lack of creativity in recent characters' design." They also included photos of Ruan Mei, Guinaifen, Yukong, and Hanya for comparison.

In the replies, Honkai: Star Rail fans agreed with the sentiment, particularly with female characters from the Xianzhou Luofu. A user said that there's a wide range of designs from Chinese culture, which is where the region was based on, that HoYoverse could pull from. Another echoed this statement by pulling up the outfits of Genshin Impact characters from Liyue, which is a region similar to Xianzhou Luofu, and pointed out that it had more variety.

Meanwhile, a number of Honkai: Star Rail fans defended HoYoverse's design choices for the Xianzhou Luofu ladies. A fan explained that the similarity in color scheme and silhouette could be because the characters are either warriors or wearing uniforms as part of certain Xianzhou commissions. However, the arguments didn't quell the disappointment of Honkai: Star Rail fans, especially since characters from Belobog City, like Seele and Bronya, didn't seem to have this issue.

With Honkai: Star Rail about to move on to Penacony, players will be introduced to a roster of new characters with equally unique designs. Argenti, for example, is a knight wearing white and red armor, which is already a different design from previously released characters. Despite the accusations from some fans that HoYoverse had been lazy with recent character designs, the developer still has a lot of room to make its characters stand out from each other -- be it with their individual appearances, their abilities, or their compelling lore.
