Throughout the first eight months of the game's life, HoYoverse has given fans of the sci-fi RPG plenty of ways to acquire their favorite characters. The developer frequently features free gacha currency, handing out free Star Rail Special Passes as login bonuses during each update and regularly distributing codes and free rewards for more Stellar Jades. HoYoverse has also often given away free units within Honkai: Star Rail, with another reportedly coming soon.

HoYoverse has featured multiple chances for players to pick up free Honkai: Star Rail characters through events and rewards. The developer has featured multiple characters tied to events as a reward for completion, recently confirming that Version 1.6's "Pure Fiction" event will give players a free copy of Lynx. HoYoverse even revealed that players will be able to acquire a free five-star character soon, giving out new five-star Dr. Ratio to celebrate Honkai: Star Rail winning "Best Mobile Game" at the Game Awards. Now, Version 2.0 is set to feature even more free characters.

A new leak shared by prominent Honkai: Star Rail leaker c2tr has revealed players will be able to acquire a free four-star character during Version 2.0's main event. The event, titled "Hanu's Prison Break," features plenty of Stellar Jades as rewards for completing its various challenges, also rewarding players with a "Journey Encounter." The envelope item can be redeemed to obtain a free four-star unit from a selection of four Honkai: Star Rail characters including Arlan, Asta, Yukong, and Guinaifen. The leak does not specifically state how players will be able to acquire the "Journey Encounter" item.

Honkai: Star Rail's newest four-star selection ticket is not the first time the RPG has featured a similar item during an event. Version 1.4's "Aetherium Wars" event previously featured a free four-star Honkai: Star Rail character as a reward, granting players the option to choose from Serval, Pela, Luka, and Hook as their free character. HoYoverse also features multiple four-star characters available to earn through in-game progression, with characters like Herta and Qingque given out for reaching in-game milestones.

Version 2.0's free four-star character comes as Penacony's launch will look to give players plenty of chances to pick up their favorite characters. Honkai: Star Rail will reportedly give additional Star Rail Special Passes as a free reward during the update, alongside the typical 10 Passes given with each update. HoYoverse has also granted out numerous Stellar Jade rewards throughout recent patches, celebrating both the game's awards success and Honkai: Star Rail's PS5 version passing one million players. Star Rail's newest free character gives players another chance to pick up characters they may have missed.
