HoYoverse is known for creating alternate versions of its characters, and Honkai: Star Rail is currently making waves with its unique take on select units. After introducing different variants of the main protagonists from the Astral Express, Honkai: Star Rail is set to release the 5-star version of Tingyun, who's now known as Fugue.

Fugue is an upcoming 5-star Fire-type Nihility character launching in Version 2.7, along with Sunday. She is essentially the damage dealer version of Tingyun, who is a 4-star Harmony character who buffs allies' stats and regenerates their Ultimate energy, following the trend of releasing character designs that are completely different from the original. Plus, she's the first non-protagonist who received an alternate variant in Honkai: Star Rail, and many fans have been looking forward to it after Tingyun disappeared in the main story.

Honkai: Star Rail's Fugue is the Much-Awaited Reincarnation of Tingyun

Honkai Star Rail Tingyun new form leaks

To understand why Tingyun turned into Fugue, Honkai: Star Rail players need to go back to Trailblazer's first adventure to Xianzhou Luofu. The planet was suffering a Stellaron Crisis brought on by the Lord Ravager Phantylia the Undying, who possessed Tingyun and used her body to infiltrate the Luofu. When she reveals herself, she snaps Tingyun's neck, and the Astral Express isn't able to retrieve the Foxian's body because it disappeared.

Since then, Tingyun is presumed dead in the main storyline, especially because Yukong held a Foxian funeral for her fallen comrade. But many Honkai: Star Rail fans have been hopeful that Tingyun would return in a big way, and true enough, they hear her voice again in Version 2.5's epilogue. It's still unknown how Tingyun transformed into Fugue, but the epilogue reveals that Ruan Mei is the one who discovered the Foxian and might have a hand in helping her "come back to life."

In psychiatric terms, "fugue" means a state or period of loss of awareness of one's identity, often associated with certain forms of hysteria and epilepsy. Perhaps Ruan Mei is trying to help Tingyun recover from her supposed death, hence the birth of Fugue.

Based on the official splash art, Tingyun still retains her dark brown hair and Foxian ears as Fugue. What's different is she now has around six pink tails, and her outfit is a different silhouette compared to before.

How Fugue's Abilities Differ From Tingyun

Tingyun

4-star Lightning, Path of Harmony

Fugue

5-star Fire, Path of Nihility

As mentioned, Fugue is a 5-star Fire-type Nihility character, which means that she can deal burn damage over time (DOT). It's the opposite of Tingyun's Harmony abilities, which offer stat buffs and energy regen to allies. What is interesting about Fugue's rumored kit is that she allegedly still has support abilities, with leakers suggesting that she's similar to March 7th's The Hunt variant.

According to leaks, Fugue might have a Skill that increases the Break Effect of allies, while enhancing her own ATK damage. The Nihility part can be seen in the fact that she can allegedly apply a debuff to enemies that reduces their Toughness, while her Ultimate is rumored to ignore elemental weaknesses. If Fugue's kit is confirmed, she would be a great main DPS or sub-DPS for Break Effect and all-Nihility teams. She might also be a good unit for Honkai: Star Rail's rumored Feigned Toughness meta.

Possible Fugue Teams

  • Break Effect: Fugue, Harmony Trailblazer, Ruan Mei, and Huohuo/Lingsha
  • All-Nihility: Acheron, Fugue, Pela, and Huohuo/Lingsha

Fugue Could Be Teasing a Rumored Honkai: Star Rail Feature

There had been rumors that Honkai: Star Rail might roll out an expanded version of its Path-switching mechanic. Players can already access this when switching between Trailblazer's variants, but Honkai: Star Rail might condense the roster by putting all variants under one character. With Fugue coming out, Version 2.7 might officially introduce this feature, and could be a potential teaser for other non-protagonist variants that are coming down the line.
