Homeworld 3's two factions have a lot of the same ships while offering a few unique ones here and there to make each faction unique with a slight variation in play style. Despite the occasional differences, the same types of ships can be built and function in very similar ways such as turrets.

When building a turret from your Mothership, they first will appear as an ordinary ship. As their name implies they can be placed in certain locations on the map to attack enemy ships than get close. Here's how to build and place turrets correctly.

How To Place Turrets In Homeworld 3

The Player Deploying A Turret

Turrets can be built after researching the first Corvette Class ship in each faction. They are found towards the bottom of the build menu, below the Capital Class ships. Despite being a turret and not a regular ship turrets are bound by a population limit the same as all units that are split between the two types of turrets.

Once a turret has been built it will be useful in its ship form until deployed using the Deploy action hotkeyed to T. After selecting this command, a turret can be placed only on pieces of terrain, such as an asteroid or large debris that make up the cover of the map. This does greatly limit the usefulness of turrets depending on the map as some have many more locations for a turret to be placed than others.

The locations where a turret can be placed can't be changed but the rest of your fleet can move to receive the additional support of a turret. For those wanting to use turrets purely defensively, it can be helpful to move your Mothership closer to some debris in space to then set turrets up. This will also give your enemy the chance to use that debris as cover but a few well-placed turrets can make cover deadly for enemy ships.

A turret can be moved once placed by using the Undeploy Turret ability. This simply turns the turret back into ship mode and lets the player reposition and redeploy the turret as often as they would like. While the faction often differs with specific ships, both factions have an Anti-Strikecraft and Anti-Capital turret to choose from. While Frigates and Corvettes fall in the middle between these two classes, the Anti-Strikecraft turret is more effective against Corvettes while the Anti-Capital turrets are more effective against Frigates.
